Description
I really like the "print" button (with all the formating options), which encourages users to make further use of my wiki's contents. Could we have a similar "email this page" function? I think it would be a very useful feature, and it would help spread the word on one's wiki (and, of course, on Wikidot as well). I know that a similar resource is available through the browser's capabilities (file > send > page by email/link by email), but I believe a button (maybe similar to the "print" button, with formatting options) would be more efficient in getting the users to promote a site's contents.

We encourage you to "rate" the suggestions. The higher the rating, the better the chance of the wish being granted (well, possibly).
I would like to see this implemented in a way that is not a simple "mailto:" formatted link since those who use webmail mail may not be able to use it. A small form that works like these:
http://javascript.internet.com/page-details/email-this-page.html
http://www.ptc.com/cgi/common/email_form.pl
would be my preference.

Put following code on one of your pages and try the click.. butof course you should change the http... to YOUR
page URL!
The code block is hidden and the iframed code call should be renamed if y<ou have more of them on the page…
Have a try!
reminder: as Ed has written - not every mail application likes links and not ever webmail can be called….
| Edit by ErichSteinboeck: to make this work, I've added a missing quote in [[code type="html]] and added <html> before <head>

Thanks, Helmut! I gave it a try and it works quite well. I was also impressed with the possibility of keeping both the html code and the iframe in the same page (I had no idea how to do it without leaving the code visible). Your code snippet sure deserves its own how-to page :)
I think yours is a good solution if one wants the "email this" button added to only a few pages. However, adding the code to many pages (in my case — a compilation of online resources — hundreds so far, and counting) may be too time-consuming. A Wikidot-based solution (such as with social bookmarking, rating, etc.) would be ideal. In my wikis, each new resource is a stand-alone, template-based page; the modules "comment" and "rate", as well as site-related instructions, are kept in an "include" page, which is automatically inserted to new pages, as part of the template. It would be nice to be able to include something like an "email this page" button this way as well, automatically.
And I do agree with Ed:

Note that instead of hiding the [[code type="html"]] block in a [[collapsible show=" " hide=" "]] block you may simply comment it out.
The [[iframe .../code/1 ...]] will still see it.
Nice to know that. Neat! Thanks, Erich.

Thanks! Typo corrected!
Does anyone still send links via email?
When I want to share a link with friends I send it via IM (ICQ, Skype) and when I want to share it with the world I use some social bookmarking service (e.g. Simpy).
I am curious to know if others still use email for this.

I still use email to share links links quite a bit. Both at work and with friends. I'm in the age group (50+) where IM, texting, etc. hasn't really caught on. It's hard enough for me to teach the old dogs I work with how to manage their e-mail!
Even my geeky friends and I primarily use e-mail to stay in touch and share info. That said, I'm starting to enjoy Twitter. I resisted for a long time, but my boss told me to "check it out" since so many businesses are jumping on board.
It also seems that there are so many services competing for our attention, I don't know how they all can survive. I know apps like Digsby can help manage your accounts, but seriously!, how many do we need? Sorry, I digress. You ask a simple question and I start a dissertation!

Wow , Digsby seems great! :)

My son-in-law is extremely well-connected and uses more services than I can count and he swears by Digsby.

Just stumbled upon a very interesting site for sharing links: http://www.dropvine.com.

I am 47 but when it is about trying new things I'm just 17 ! (I hesitated : but 47-17=30 )
However, all my friends bear their real age.
I once tried to share my delicious bookmarks with colleagues or friends. It does not work !
They are still at the point, they change of PC, they loose their bookmarks/favorites.
I feel the same. I love trying and learning new things. I've been hooked on technology since my dad brought home a Timex Sinclair 1000 computer in 1982 (the first home computer to break the $100 price barrier). I remember using a pencil eraser to hit those tiny keys. Later, I cut my teeth on the TI-99/4A Home Computer; teaching myself BASIC, then Extended BASIC and eventually Assembly Language. Those were the days! I even sold a couple of programs commercially that earned me enough to make my house payments for a while. Can you imagine writing a desktop publishing/page layout program that handled a complete 8.5" x 11" page and runs in 48K of memory (16K base memory plus a 32K addon card required)? That's K, not MB!
If you're interested, my distributor published this article (starting on page 4) that talks about the challenges and background of my "best seller" back in 1992. It seems a lifetime ago that I abandoned my beloved TI-99/4A. My 15 minutes of fame expired a long time ago! ;)

I'm with you on this Ed, many of my contacts still see email as cutting edge technology (sigh).
I signed up for Twitter yesterday.

Rob,
What's your user name on Twitter? I tried (and failed) to find you. There's several Rob Elliots on Twitter! (and no strath* users that i could find)

Ed, I have just posted on the Twitter forum adding to the steady stream of people who can't be found by either their username or real name (you got both right!). Mine is not an isolated example and it seems they have a real problem with their search engine if such basic functionality as searching for user fails. I do wonder if they are using a form of google custom search which is usually dreadful at pulling back correct search results (searching on wordle is an example of that).

That explains it, then. I thought maybe you had created a new secret identity!
Now that you mention this, I have seen similar issues with a keyword search I monitor for work. I use twhirl as my Twitter desktop client and I have it set to capture any public tweets with the word "davanni's" (the restaurant company I work for). I don't always get the results I expect with this setup and some tweets simply get missed.
On a positive note, I helped us pick up a $700 order 2 days ago because I am monitoring those tweets!
As my boss said, "saaawwwweeeeeet!"

No wonder the boss was pleased. Hopefully there'll be a small bonus with E Johnson written on it.
These web2 tools are really starting to have an impact on business which is good.

Continuing off-topic:
14 have posted on the "known issues" forum with the same problem in the last hour! Not good.

We have strayed a bit, haven't we?
It seems like this might be why you're invisible for a while:
Your tweet shows up on the from:strathview search, but you're still nowhere to be found on a user search.
