The above is a revamp of an original idea from hartnell.
It is a proposal for a new "start" page, to attempt to include some of gabrys requests.
Love it. Very approachable.
How do you feel about putting the welcome info that's currently under Latest Community News at the very top outside the tables, or as it's own row? If you were willing to make those cell titles headers, a ToC could be nice at the top too.
Everything looks good though. Nice work.
I would delete the following two boxes from the start page (and put them somewhere else):
This would make it cleaner.
I've just added the RSS link to the community news
The "New to Wikidot? Get Help." Box should be at the top. It is small and high priority. The big long news thing won't bet pushed down much by the change, but it would help new visitors a lot.
Acually, to reduce clutter for new visitors, I would recommend a separate news or activity page for the forum activity and news posts. Link it from the start.
Also, the "You might be looking for…" section should not be listed as part of forum activity. It is separate (and more important?). Put it near the top as a separate section.
On that activity page, it'd be nice to see Recent Embed requests, Recent Bug reports, and Recent Wish List entries.
If there ever is an activity page, I've put up some ListPages for the most recent bug reports, wishes, and embed requests. It's probably not the most important thing in the world, since you can kinda tell what's new from the main pages, but I like it.

I've reorganized boxes and made some typography changes.
Now both columns are more or less equally high, which is good looking :).
As I'm going for my vacation now I won't contribute to this page layout/template, so if you think this page is ready for setting as the start page, discuss and do it.
Cheers!
