Scenario. You want to let some members create/edit pages from one category, but not all members. By default, you can only let an entire group "create" and or "edit" pages as well as other rights. However you cannot let individuals of a group edit or create pages. So let's say you have a staff member and you want him to be able to edit main pages, but you do not want to grant him moderator status letting him edit *all* pages. This is the work-around:
Step 1
Edit the permissions for the category that you wish to let select members edit but not necessarily let all members create, in this example, we'll call it a "staff" category. Since I don't want all members to edit or create them, I set the permissions to only allow the "page creator/owner" to edit the page but disallow the members from creating new pages.
Step 2
Next, have staff make their pages using any of the categories they are granted creation rights to.
Step 3
Use your own admin permissions to "rename/move" the staff authored pages to the "staff" category. Of course any category will work, including the _default (root) category.
After the page has been moved, it can still be edited by the original author without letting your general members create new "staff" pages. You can use this same method to create primary pages in the _default category that are editable by staff members without the need to give them moderator control.
What if you already have existing pages that you want staff members to edit?
Have your staff member create a page consisting of the same name and content of the existing page but in a different category then delete the original from the first category and move the newly created version made by your staff member to the original category. You will now both be able to edit the page and your links (including backlinks) will remain valid.
This is not a perfect fix and does require a little extra effort on behalf of the site owner but it will enable you to let your staff assume some of the load without giving them moderator power.
I hope you find this useful and when you grow tired of "working" on your site, be sure to check out my PBBG# site for a list of the best Free PBBG's available.
