The current "join a wiki" process is too complicated for an inexperienced computer user!!! I even got a little confused myself- in part because of the sequence of events, and in part because I was "forced" to jump around to 3 or 4 pages to complete the process.
None of it is really that complicated, BUT, at each new page, I was left wondering "am I there yet", or, why are they still asking me to go through more steps.
As an example, I have created a wiki and invited about 15 people to join, and so far, only 3 have succeeded. They are all good with email, but this join/login process leaves them confused. Here is my recommendation:
1. When someone is invited to join a wiki, the link they receive in the invitation email should open a page that takes care of the entire joining process, and ends with taking the user to the home page of the wiki they were invited to.
1b. When the invitee is already a member of Wikidot, the link in the email should take the user straight to the home page of the wiki they were invited to… with some verification if necessary.
2. When the invitee is NOT already a member of Wikidot, the steps of the joining process should all be listed "1-2-3" on the one and only join page. And the details of each step should be hidden until the user is on that step. The details of each step open up as the user passes through each previous step. As best as I recall, these are the steps:
1. Enter wikidot joining info
2. Check email and enter verification code
3. (optional) Modify key profile settings (with note that user can modify profile at any time by going to "xxx" page.)
4. Click here to go to the wiki you were invited to - takes user to home page of the invited wiki.
I strongly recommend that someone create such a page- I think it will increase wikidot usage tremendously!
… Also, I don't think this should be very difficult (for an experienced wikidot developer), because there are really no new steps, it's just that the steps are all managed on one page.
