Hi! I'm fresh to wikidot, just started my homesite today. Some questions about preparing galleries:
1. Can I make a gallery have descriptions for thumbnails?
2. It would be great to have descriptions attached to full-size images as well (when opened from gallery).
3. Uploading a group of files (a specified folder) would be a good improvement for lazy people. I've got pictures for a gallery prepared, but have to upload them file by file.
Hi,
these are very good suggestions. I will try to implement description for images — now you can add comments to uploaded files so I will try to find a nice way to display these comments for the thumbnails.
After clicking on a thumbnail it would be nice to see sth nicer than the raw image, agree!!!
Multiple file upload would be a bit more difficult but eventually possible.
HOWEVER, if you are making a gallery, perhaps it would be easier to use Flickr (and the FlickrGallery module) for this? Just like here: http://sandbox.wikidot.com/flickr-module-tests - this way you have a nicer photo management.
I would also gladly include support for other online galleries since I believe they might have better image management options than upload/describe files on Wikidot. If you have any suggestions here — please share them! They however must have a nice API. http://www.mediamax.com/ is something I would look at for both image and external file storage. But have not played with it yet.
thanks - michal
I know there are many gallery services out there, but flickr looks too complicated (don't need comments and all that stuff). Wikidot gallery is simple and that's the advantage - only things I would expect from gallery is:
- picture index
- descriptions (using descriptions would be great!)
- next/previous navigation to use when displaying enlarged pictures
and it's all that makes it functional and clear.
When viewing a gallery, I prefer to concentrate on the picture - adds, comments and banners are distracting and sometimes even annoying.
I have no ideas right now - where to find free, simple and stylish gallery services, but I'll keep looking for it. PBase looks fine to me, but it's a commercial service.
Michal, great thanks for developing this project! It gives me a lot of fun to see how quickly a homesite can be built!
OK, I think I'll try with Google - Picasa web albums. Seems easy to use. 250MB space per user.
I will certainly work on the galleries support soon. I have been talking to a few more people that would need the gallery feature and this will go exactly towards the features you have specified. I will keep the community informed!
I will also try to contact Flickr if they allow me to extend the FlickrModule to make more complete galleries.
Ok, I have worked a bit on making nice galleries and here is the result:

If you make "sets" in Flickr now and call the FlickrGallery like that:
[[module FlickrGallery photosetId="72157594198285784" size="square"]]
(replacing the photosetId with your own)
you can make quite a nice gallery. The images are now displayed inside Wikidot (can be disabled).
I will try to do the same for uploaded (attached) images but I think managing photos with Flickr is much easier.
Oh yeah! This is great. I'll use it this way for sure! Starting to prepare galleries… Thank you!
Is there any way to resize the length of the thumbnail display? My site has sidebar boxes and the image thumbnails overlap onto the sidebars.
I haven't seen a good way, but you could try putting it in a DIV and setting the width of it. However, the overlapping problem with floats is a bug and should be reported. (I have seen it to, but I never got around to posting it)
I just wanted to express my importance for captions on each thumbnailed picture uploaded to the site using the file button at the page lower right menu. We have a wiki site that is dedicated to a particular on-line game. We have a group of members that wish to upload a picture of their game charactors but at this time we have no way to use this function productively. The simple method of the user selecting file and uploading the picture is perfect. The page looks well done with one problem, we don't know who the particular photos belong to without looking at the page history. And non-member site visitors don't have any way at all to know who these photos belong to.
Using Picassa, flikr, etc. is way to complicated for our users to be comfortable with. Please try to address this issue. You gave us a piece of perfection with the Gallery module, now we are ready for it to be finished.
Thank you.
Well, back to the galleries related topics after some time.. I've been using flickr galleries module and it still looks somehow rough.
Is there a way to use modules like SimpleViewer for Flickr images? Or maybe for Picasa as well? I would love to set such a skin for my galleries but have no idea if it's just posiible within Wikidot.
