Summary:

i want to create a glossary of terms. any tips/tricks for doing this?

1.)
so far i just made a list of the alphabet on the main page… A B C D E etc..
each letter is a link to a page for that letter
on that page i listed terms that are spelled with that letter:

A
abstraction
accuracy
etc…

sound logical/efficient?

2.)
is there anyway to dynamically have pages of certain letters listed under the letter of the alphabet it corresponds to?
if i were to use mediawiki, could i enter data quickly through sql rather than through the wiki? i have about 70 pages of terms to enter, each page has about 8 terms.

3.)
ive just had so much trouble with mediawiki/sql/php/etc that i decided to just give up and use the web approach.

4.)
also concerning that, can i eventually copy this site to my computer (ie. download it in its entirety) so that i may post it up somewhere else (school server) eventually?

5.)
basically here is my task:
my professor wants me to create a wiki of terms. it will be used for a class. i presumed it would be best to use mediawiki so they can put it on a private secure school server….but i gave up and made it online… any dictionary templates out there?

6.)
i tried ripping code from wikipedia, but the syntax is very different…

i numbered everything so you can quickly respond to each segment numerically identified…

i have checked out a plethora of free wiki webbased sites, and wikidot is by far the cleanest looking, most robust, and doesnt have ads everyhwere!!! awesome!!!

1) Doing it manually is always possible, but there are better ways:
easiest way is to use "parenting" - every page is parented to the "starting" letter page. Than you can use site map and "breadcrumb navigation" at the top to navigate throu the pages.

1.1) you can do it with backlinks module - every page contains ( like in wikipedia) a link to such "main"page and the main page contains only of the "backlinks module" - showing what belongs to this page ( by linking) .

EDDIT: 1.2.) you can use "tags" : A, B, C, and so on - every starting letter gives a tag. Than you can use it like our glossary here ( down as example)

2) same answer - dynamically build lilsts are better.
2.1) No there is no possibility to "insert" automatically ( or enter it) throu sql or other tools. Only done by hand…. sorry… the setup here is different from other wikis…
3) for a colaboration tool this is a good decision! No longer a lot of programming work..

4) 1) There is the backup possibility - saving pages ( text) and images to a zip file - you can download it to you computer always.
4.2) YES! wikidot.com is OPEN SOURCE - you can always install/implement your own server where ever you want to hold your own ( now very private) wiki.
4.3) Do not forget - the wiki can be "private" if there are such legal requironments…

5) Example of our glossary/ dictionary: http://community.wikidot.com/start-glossary a small list of terms - not yet neccessary to collect the pages to summary-letters…

6) if you can prgramm a liltle script to "transfer" the text from wikipedia-syntax into wikidot.com syntax - this would be great! but this is a big work…..

Here's my own simple glossary solution using the ListPages module:

Each one paragraph definition gets its own dedicated page which I then collate and display on the glossary index page. I could make it better in a number of ways though quite happy with it at present.

Thanks. I do similar variations of that "auto-generated index" page for all my other categories. By default I use the "old" Pages module for a simple list though I can do a lot more with the ListPages module.
