My website contains a directory of researchers working on South American ethnolinguistics (http://www.etnolinguistica.org/index:cadastro). One of the items listed is their email address, which I used to protect with Recaptcha mailhide. However, this service has been discontinued by Google, so I'm looking for a way to replace that. Any ideas?
I found 2 similar services here: https://alternativeto.net/software/recaptcha-mailhide/
I can't personally recommend either but at first glance, both options look like you can implement them using standard Wikidot link syntax so you don't have to use iframes like you're doing with hidemail now.
I'm sorry to hear Google abandoned their captcha. Editing ~250 contacts doesn't sound like much fun.
Thank you, Ed, for your reply, and for the suggestions. I really like the idea behind scr.im. It seems very clean and straightforward, but at this point I'm even afraid of investing any time into third-party services which could be shut down at any time. I've taken a look at their blog, and there are no recent news, even though the service is certainly up and running (I've created a few test links myself). For now, I may only add a generic contact form and then forward any messages to the individual researcher.
By the way, I really hope the reports of Wikidot's pending demise have been greatly exaggerated. ;) Wikidot has been a great service to me so far, and I've invested a lot of time building a website that relies on Wikidot's many unique features. I'm not a power user, so I'm pretty satisfied with the services currently offered, but the pessimistic views expressed here got me worried (especially because they're coming from people who have contributed so much to our community, and who certainly know much more than I do about what's going on).
Very best wishes to all, amigos.
Hi Kawina,
I am not soo pessimistic about the future of Wikidot. - it is running on minimum level of support.
The only point for me to think about is the reason why they are doing so.. and do not speak about the internal targets.
Are the developing a complete different "app" ?
Are they working on a complete different way - outside of internet?
Service is my success. My webtips:www.blender.org (Open source), Wikidot-Handbook.

I agree with Helmut. Wikidot will probably be around for some time, but it seems pretty clear we can't expect any feature improvements. They seem to be doing a bare minimum to keep things running. I suspect they are making a good income by basically doing nothing but collecting ad revenue, so won't be shutting down anytime soon.
Thanks, guys. That makes me more optimistic. I'd love to hear more about new Wikidot sites and old sites that have been silently growing for a while; I am especially curious to see whether there are other sites that use Wikidot in a similar way, i.e. as a digital academic library. I'll post something soon about my site as well at the "Coffee Table" forum. Thanks again, Ed and Helmut!
