Try putting a css module at the top of your nav:side page with the following:
[[module css]]
#side-bar p { text-align: center; }
[[/module]]
That will center normal paragraph text in your side bar.

I am not using "normal" paragraph text. I want a list of links with regular categorical text in bold above the links. I tried the module css code, but it also doesn't work.
Please let me know how to get links centered on the side page.

I found the mistake, the module css code does work, but you have to put the text after the closing module tag.
Sorry I should have told you that there should only ever be CSS (and any comments on the CSS) in a CSS module, nothing else. The documentation on this and other modules and everything else can be found at http://www.wikidot.com/doc
Also, don't forget to have a look at the how-tos which give lots of good hints, tips, suggestions and examples.
