Images not displaying properly...

Hey all,

I have made my wiki site private, and it won't display any images properly on the landing page.

I can understand not being able to see the other images in the closed section of my wiki,
But shouldn't they still be viewable if I have put the files for the landing page on the same page?

Can someone confirm that this is the normal behaviour or suggest a way to change this?

gerdami.wikidot.com is private (for no special reason)

but I can see the picture when not connected.

Okay I've tracked it down to being a FIREFOX 2 ONLY issue…

It seems that FF2 won't display any of the images if the site is private, even on the start page.

This is also the case, even if the images are stored in the same place as the start page.

Test 1: View start page for PRIVATE site in IE7, image displayed
Test 2: View start page for PRIVATE site in FF2, image NOT displayed

Test 3: Changed start page to one from the SYSTEM catagory in IE7, image displayed
Test 4: Changed start page to one from the SYSTEM catagory in FF2, image NOT displayed

Test 5: Moved image from ADMIN catagory to the same page in IE7, image displayed
Test 6: Moved image from ADMIN catagory to the same page in FF2, image NOT displayed

Can anyone confirm whether this is a bug?

I can never see your start page!

All is redirected to your system:join page !

I can not see any iomage on the private site and not on the "offizial" ( no private too) old site!

No images.

Are you sure you have attached the images to the correct page ?

And with the "LONG" url! ?
( as gerdami did)

@gerdami,

It displays properly in IE7, but not for FF2 with exactly identical settings.
So there is definitely something that FF2 does not like that is causing the images to not be displayed.

Sorry, I should have clarified.
I am talking about my "official" public wiki.

I was hoping to temporarily lock it while I move some stuff around by making it private.

As you can see from the front page, there are no images dispayed when using FF2, but they are displayed when using IE7.

And "yes" I am using the long url.
I always type the long url for any links. ;-)

Do you suspect that it might be the image itself?

That is strange because it displays perfectly once I have logged in or when the site is made public.

Also it is not animated or anything, so that is not the issue.

EDIT: Tried with other images, same problem. Grrrrrrrrrr.

I did start having a look at this a few hours ago, then i heard some noises from the flat above mine. Then i heard water dripping.
Have now got a swimming pool in my kitchen :-(((.

Anyway, its all got something to do with what you have and not have in your cache, wether it is private or not, and whether its an extended theme or not , or any combination of all three. I can spend half an hour looking at this, then i must go shopping, because if i dont get my kids their presies, i'm in deep &^%T !… so bear with me :-)

the images that you want to display, MUST come from a non private source.

Have copied the construction.gif to one of my open sites, used this as the image location. Works.!

Will need to do the same for the smiley logo, but in the meantime… i have removed the extended theme from "system".. so you get at least the title.

Having said that i need to find out where gerdami pic comes from… but right now

I AM GOING SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!

Okay now I am REALLY confused because:

1. Gerdami's site is private yet he is able to display private pics on his join page?

2. You are able to paste your spaysig, which is stored in the Sandbox page of my private-smileypedia admins wiki?

I don't know where gerdami pic originates from. It may not be stored on his pages.
the spray sig, i have stored in at least three places so i have loads of backups.

what proved the point to me was (if you look in the history of offending page,) Is i linked to three pics in one of my private sites. No work. Made site pubic.. and they all displayed.

That was good enough for me.

Time for "S%^T shave and shower" (heres another one for you gerdarmi, it means i now have to make myself look good, cos I'm going out soon and need to look my best) ((difficult a the best of times))

… but not exactly the same.
And may be no 1st image at all …

If not connected, you should see "construction.gif" instead of the smiley.

Well,
BradLee was right from the beginning: you cannot display an image from a private wiki, even if the image is attached to landing system:join page.

However, in my first reply, I could display an image with the following syntax:

[[image construction.gif size="small"]]

The latter attribute forced wikidot to create an image at the location
http://smileypedia.wikidot.com/local--resized-images/system:construction/construction.gif/small.jpg
… which seems to be not protected by the website's privacy!

You can name it a bug!
However, the long awaited Wikidot 2.0, would have private and public categories or pages, I hope.

Hi Gerdami,

I would not label it a "bug" per se. As it is more of a design choice that has been made.

I can understand that if a site is set to private, then you do not want anything public. But setting the landing page or system:join page to be an exception would be useful in case you want to still have the site logo displayed or something!

Even if they do reprogram it to only allow images that are stored directly on the landing page to be displayed.

If this is not something that can be changed easily and it is going to take a while for Wikidot 2.0, then I may just end up using photobucket to host the images though, because your method kind of ruins their look a bit.

I said it was a bug because of the local—resized-images directory that allowed the display of something from a private wiki, which was designed to not display anything else that the landing page.

Of course, I agree that anything attached to the "system:join" landing page should be displayed.
