hi
Specific to a wikidot site what would be the best way to make a site visible to google and other seach engines?
I mean we don't have access to meta data in the <head> section of a page.
Will front page tags help?
regards Flemming

http://thehurl.wikidot.com/ gets tons of google hits (20 a day) so I did something right. I haven't tried to do anything special with the meta data or anything like that.
"gets tons of google hits (20 a day) " how do you know?
anyway: thanks to you all for the answers.

Use google analytics and look at the graph of visits from google.
I think, the best way is to link on OTHER Sites to your Wikidot site.
You should "promote" your wiki and make it public as often as you can on blogs, news a.s.o. ..
Service is my success. My webtips:www.blender.org (Open source), Wikidot-Handbook.

When posting here, the user should also provide a link to his website.
That's how your site begins taking off.

The question you are asking has everything to do with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and very little to do with meta tags, though meta tags do factor into your sites visibility. My advice is to dive into SEO (Google "SEO") and don't expect any overnight miracles.
I'll give you a few quick tips.
1. If you haven't already, get yourself a Google Analytics account.
2. Do some keyword research and determine what common keywords might be used by search engine users to find your site. For example, my site is about PBBG's and my primary search terms are "PBBG", "Best PBBG" and "PBBG List".
3. Make sure that your pages actually contain these words and phrases.
4. Create links to your site (inbound links) and encourage others to link to your site using your keywords. For exmaple, you do not want a link that looks like this: http://pbbg.wikidot.com/. You do want a link that looks like this Best PBBG List. Note that I used all three of my primary search terms in that one link? That associates those terms with my site so that when people use Google to find your site, those keywords will be given more precendent. Look at these examples, while it's true that anyone that clicks on the link will get direct traffic, for SEO only one link will help you:
The first link will help the most. The second a little depending on the relevancy of the site linking to you, and the third will not help you much at all - As an experiment do a Google search for the phrase "click here" and you see what I mean.
5. Repeat #4 about 2490873285 times or until your site starts appearing with the first 10 results of the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages). Most people don't click further than 3 pages into Google (first 30 links) before refining their search with a new term, so unless you get on the first three pages, you will get very little traffic. However, you can use your Google Analytics account to see what other terms might be used to get traffic to your site.
There are tons of SEO tools availble and it's possibe to do things that might be considered cheating by Google so make sure you are familiar with their rules or risk getting your site banned from the Google SERPS: http://www.google.com/webmasters/
The biggest challenge you will be faced with are getting good inbound links to your site and you will have to be creative to come up with ways that are effective, but not spammy, example follows:
If you found this post helpful then you can return a small favor to me by placing a link leading to my page using the following wikidot code:
[*http://pbbg.wikidot.com/ PBBG List]
If you decide to link to me then let me know so I can return the favor. If I get 10 inbound links from this community then I'll share more about SEO. :-)
That's the beginning of link campaign … but more about that in my next post. :p *snickers*.
Want to put me to the test? Go to google and search for "PBBG" and see how I rank, on which page of the SERPS do I appear if at all? Does my wikidot site appear within the first three pages at least? Try again with "Best PBBG" and again with "PBBG List". I'm having a good week this week but SEO is very fluid, next week I could be off the first 3 SERPS. :-/ SEO is a constant work.
Whane! Good stuff mate. Thanks for this.
whats even more, is i actually understood it! :-)
Now time to put it to the test….
Am i right in saying that all the above is less than useless if the site is private?
I'm not sure that I understand private sites 100%. I'm assuming that SEO techniques would fail on a private site, or perhaps it still works, but visitors can't view the content. *shrugs*
Phil,
I am really sorry for you: a quick google search for bhgc gave me this order:
My conclusion would be that I should remove your site from http://community.wikidot.com/start-featured.
Do you agree, Phil ? ;-)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
:-)
If you are impatient, you can submit your url to google here http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Thanks for all your advice.

Make sure you add your site to Google, Yahoo and MSN. If you get on these 3, you get 85% of the people using search engines. Each search engine has a page where you can submit your site. After that, make sure you spread the word about your site on blogs and same topic related sites.
Thanks a lot for all the advice, this was precisely what i was after. I tried subitting my url to google but it would not verify it, saying "We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header. I'm not sure what to do about it??
Cheerss and Thanks
