I'm trying to set up a custom domain (.fi) for my Wikidot site.

Ficora's (the administrative organ of .fi domains) user panel doesn't give me an option to edit "cname" or "a" parameters (as adviced in the custom domain how-to). All it asks are the names of the nameservers (ns1.something and ns2.something) and their ip adresses and I don't have a clue what to put there. It also says that there has to be at least two working nameservers.

I tried to change the names of the nameservers to ns1.wikidot.com and ns2.wikidot.com (they were previously set up for another service provider) and now it says that the name servers are incorrect and if I can't get it to work in 1 month, they will cancel my domain, no refund. So this is a kind of emergency and any help will be appreciated.

The custom domain is "www.virtuaali.fi" and the Wikidot site is "virtuaali.wikidot.com".

You need a domain hoster rather than just a registrar. .fi domains appear to be more tightly controlled than most of the others, so the normal names are not likely to be able to help you. For example my hoster, 123reg.co.uk, offers other European domains but not Finnish.

All of the following people can register the .FI domain name of their choice, the owner (applicant) must be:

• a person of at least 15 years of age who has a Finnish Personal Identity Number and is resident in Finland

Beware: a natural person can only register a domain name with the same name. For example, Jane Smith may apply for a domain name that is a combination similar to the following: janesmith.fi, smithjane.fi, and so on.

• a legal entity, resident in Finland, like:
  • a company entered in the Finnish Trade Register, the Finnish Register of Associations or the Finnish Register of Foundations
  • a Finnish public corporation, an independent public service, a public association

Beware: the domain name must be close to the name of the legal entity

Just to clear up the confusion a little more, there are three services that you need:

1. Domain Registration — administrates the paperwork involved in registering a domain name.
2. Domain (DNS) Hosting — provides DNS servers so that your domain name resolves to your website.
3. Webpage hosting — provides a web-server.

Some companies offer a mix of two or three of these. For example 123reg.co.uk offer all three but I only use them for #1 and #2. It sounds like Ficora only offer #1, and Wikdot only do #3, so you are looking for someone to do #2.

Thanks for the info and clarification! I thought that #1 and #2 are the same thing. Currently my site is hosted by a provider that offers #2 and #3 and I'll just have to get rid of the #3. I found all the parameters I need (a and cname) from the provider's control panel (and not Ficora's as I thought).

I was able to revert the settings as they were at Ficora so I managed to remove the "1 month threat".
