meta tags in head
tomcheniamtomcheniam 1167191566|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Hi all!

I'm trying to put my site into google and its asking me to put a meta tag in my <head> section. Am I able to do that. I'm also wondering if anyone has advice in putting their webpages into search engines.

Thanks!

Hi,

currently there is no way to add META tags into the head.

But as far as search engines are concerned — Wikidot has been designed with SEO in mind. So far Google indexes the pages really nicely. But as always — you need backward links to your site to get high position in the results.

You can follow any (non-wiki) positioning (SEO) tutorial. You can also check if Google has indexed your site:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:YOUR-SITE-NAME.wikidot.com

or try adding this manually: http://www.google.com/addurl/

You could also try to add your site do http://dmoz.org which is used by A LOT of online directories.

Is there any chance you'd add an admin bit similar to google analytics which would allow us to use google webmaster tools? It just needs to temporarily add the following in the first head section of the main page (or all the pages since that'd be simpler to do):

<meta name="verify-v1" content="TheRandomStringGivenByGoogleWebmasterTools" />

Has this been resolved yet? I'm getting a decent SERP with my keywords but the description of my site happens to be my menu. :/

No. This is still a major problem as far as I can tell.

I assume the thing is this: you cant 'verify' ownership of the site? And so, to cut a long story short, you can't create a sitemap.

Without being able to create a good sitemap, any large WIKI site isn't worth creating.

Now I'd love someone to show me how I'm wrong…

Please?!!

Sorry, I do not understand your target..

What is a "good" sitemap ? over sites or over pages ? what is ownership for you ?

I just came across this post trying to verify my site in Google Webmaster Tools so that I could create a sitemap. Is this still something that cannot be done?

Its a pro beta feature I believe. Worked fine for me, but will not work if your site is not a pro site.

I just came across my answer: No you cannot. However, you can vote for this functionality. Click the rating plus sign on the metatag-editor and google webmaster tools pages.

The answer is not simply no. I have google web master tools working on my wiki, and I submitted my site map. It works great. Its just Pro only for now.

Wait a little , - it is now in beta-testing done by the "pro" users ( most of them has the "star" near their avatar).

Here is a short feature description of the upcoming meta tags setting feature:

Admins of wikis are able to edit meta elements for a given page or site-wide.

At the moment only <meta name="…" content="…"/> are supported. http-equiv tags are not supported.

Currently the list of available names is predefined and contain:

The option can be found on each wiki page, click on "+options" at the bottom and "edit meta".

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the help Craig Macomber and Helmuti_pdorf. I guess us mere mortals only have about a month to wait, then we can get a pro account and verify our sites for Google Webmaster tools. Can't wait!

It would be extremely helpful to know exactly when editing of meta-tags is expected to become available, and if it will be enabled on all wikidot.com hosted wikis. This is not just to do with search engines etc.: in some jurisdictions there is now an obligation to meet double-A / Priority 1+2 accessibility standards (WAI), which require meta tags to be set for language, description and keywords. In theory at least, no gov.uk website can be hosted on wikidot because of the missing meta-tags. Indeed, any UK-based organisation is at risk of legal action if their websites fall short when accessed against WAI . I was about to recommend wikidot for a gov.uk site, but cannot do so until it is possible to set meta-tags.

[I appreciate that other CMS/wiki software falls short in this critical respect. I have been contacting the developers of any web-related software I use or recommend in order to persuade them that they really should pay very close attention to meeting WAI priority 1+2 / double-A accessibility, even if they personally think (e.g.) meta-tags are pointless.]

Best wishes,
Chris

Chris. Meta tags editing will be available for paid accounts which will be available very soon. By very soon, i mean this month, the date of the 15th Dec is mentioned elsewhere.

It is available NOW to those that have been included in the pro account testing scheme.
