Still no way at all to make forum categories private?

I've just read a thread from two years ago discussing making some bits of the forum visible to only some users — and the replies suggesting starting a 2nd (parasitic) wiki with a slimmed down membership.

So, two years on, is there still no other solution?

I just want moderators/admins to be able to see a forum category that the "regular" site members can't, like I can with pages.

Is there any way to mirror a hidden forum category onto a moderators/admins only page? I'm afraid I haven't been able to increase my understanding of the forum modules much after an hour of hunting around the Community, but was hoping that maybe there's something that isn't obvious in the mainstream docs?

Your best bet would be to use a page-based forum. leiger is one of our resident experts in building those and is also very active in discussions around here. I'm sure he'll dive in when he sees your post. In the meantime, you may want to explore the Wikified Forum template he created as a starting point.

I'm sure he'll dive in when he sees your post. In the meantime, you may want to explore the Wikified Forum template he created as a starting point.

Pieter and a number of other members of the community helped to build that… in fact, I believe Pieter did most of the work. Yes, I helped though ;-)

It's a simple truth, that's all! You've done a nice job with the forum on your STE site and probably elsewhere. Plus, you have a thorough understanding of what it takes to implement a page-based forum.

The "posted by: leiger" on the Wikified forum site led me to believe you were the main lead on that template (didn't mean to ignore or diminish the work by Pieter and others who contributed).

I can't find where it says that ;-) Now I'm wondering where you got that from :P If I go to the forum-template site both threads were started by pieter, and the irongiant site doesn't say who created the page about forum-template.

Please let me know where you found "posted by: leiger" before I go crazy wondering why I can't see it anywhere! =)

Aha! Knew it was there somewhere!

Some might argue that I'm already crazy ;-)

The reason why a lot of those are posted by me is probably because I did a lot of the design for the actual IronGiant site itself - until someone came in and added in screenshots and other cool stuff as well. Looks like the old page is still there… start-text, which was later replaced by the current start page.

The petition template was done pretty much 99.9% by Pieter despite him asking me to help him with that one (if I remember correctly), as I had never used the petition modules before. That's another one I posted on IronGiant though and therefore it has my name up there.

I also notice there's a "Shared Photo Gallery" posted by a "Johnson Ed Johnson"… I wonder who that is? ;-)

Like an admin forum (on extra catgory… not with comments , only on PAGES) .

try to use the admin forum showing on http://community-playground.wikidot.com/admin-forum - this was "colpied" from the wikified forum template….

Hey Stuart,

Could you post a link to the website you want to put this on?

If you've already got an active forum, you'll want to keep that and install a version of the page-based forum in a separate group of categories for moderators.

If your forum is reasonably empty, you might consider replacing that with a page-based forum as well, before it does get a lot of content, as they give you more control over the appearance than the standard built-in forum modules do.

Also keep in mind that private categories can still be accessed using the ListPages modules and includes, so it's not true privacy yet - we're waiting on Wikidot to spend some time and fix that. All it means is that whilst most users won't be able to see what is in your hidden forum, anyone that knows what they're doing can still find out what you're posting there.

no chance to make some groups/categories privat.
Exception: http://community.wikidot.com/howto:disable-hidden-forum where you can read how the ways are now possible to "hide" the hidden group from non admins..
(but this is not working for wikdiot gurus… they know the trick..)
Question : would be possible to make the WHOLE Forum category "private" ? Viewable only for admins or members ?
(creating a forum:_public page as landing page..)

"Wiki"-technic - forum

There is the technic available to use categories&tags&parenting to build a "forum" like Threading structur:

http://projects.wikidot.com/ is a typical example for it ( NO Forum used)
http://nocomment.wikidot.com/main:start which is depreciared and is now developed more on http://extensions.wdeditor.com/

"Private" Forum ( for admins)

Using a "private" category there is a "private" Forum possible

About the question how it is visible for some gurus - I am not sure ifthis is really possible today ( Ithink it should be tested again).

Private categories

This is standard now in Wikidot - using the visibility switch in the site manager for non-default categories you can setup a category as a private one.
Visible only for the creator(&admin) or Site members, a,s,o,
The "landing page" is normal the "category:_public" for such categories…
