Like wikidot much better than google sites. Much more control. However, I noticed that search does not seem to search attachments (as google does). How to I get search to search attachments?
Also, I'm concerned about backup since this will be used by a non-profit board. Is the backup capability good/working?
There is currently no way to search for the name of a file that is attached to one of your pages. There is a ListFiles module planned which would allow you to generate your own list of files in the site. Using a bit of customisation, you'd be able to order the results according to filename, filesize, etc. This page manager is a good example of how you can order a list of results.
As for backup — Wikidot regularly performs multiple backups of the entire wikifarm. I think there is 3-4 backup servers, with two of them being in separate geographical locations to the main server. That said, personal backups are available and can be found from the Site Manager (usually on the admin:manage page in your site). They backup the page source, and your uploaded files. Things like the parent-child relationship between pages, tags, and other metadata is not backed-up by this Site Manager function, so it's not perfect.
I can't see you ever having to reset back to a previous version of your site though - I doubt the content will be lost by Wikidot.

While I really like wikidot, I guess I'm going back to Google Sites because it provides the search capability (page content & attachments) and the basic file management controls. I was just hoping there was some third party packages that others have used in conjunction with wikidot to provide these capabilities somehow. Thanks again.

You could always create a wish for that feature. The Wikidot team generally listen to what the community wants and do what they can to implement it. You'd have to wait a few weeks, perhaps even longer, which may not suit you — but it would mean that you don't miss out on the other features that Wikidot has, and Google Sites doesn't.
I used to use Google Pages (now discontinued and turned into Google Sites), and then Google Sites later. Neither of them compared to Wikidot, IMHO (in my honest opinion)

Actually, I'll add that I haven't used Google Pages or Google Sites in 6 months. It's possible that they've made big changes since I last saw it. Will go and have a look now, to see what other features Wikidot needs.
