Summary:

Is there a way to allow different users to have different permissions throughout the wiki site?

Is there a way to allow different users to have different permissions throughout the wiki site?

For instance, if my wiki site has two members Alice and Bob, and two pages X and Y, is there a way that I can let only Alice edit X and only Bob edit Y, while both users can see both pages?

All new pages fall in the _default category except if you create a "private:user-a" page.
Then you have created in a new private category.
Go to Site Manager, choose the Permissions menu.
Select the new private category and uncheck the "Inherit from _default" checkbox.
Now you can uncheck all permissions for anonymous, registered at Wikidot, site member.
Check the needed permissions for page creator/owner.
Now User-A will have owner permissions on his/her pages while User-B will only have a read-access… except if User-B have a moderator or administrator status as indicated at the bottom of the Permissions page:

A few notes
Site administrators and page moderators are not mentioned in the table above because they automatically have all the rights within the site.
"Page creators/owners" modifier can add extra control and and is suplementary to other options. E.g. it is possible to deny edit permissions in general but allow only to the author that has created the page.

You will have to explain that normally a page should fall in the _default category, - everybody can contribute -, which is the regular use of a wiki but that the private category also exist in your wiki.

Thanks for your reply, but I was looking for something a little different than that. For instance, if I had another user Carl that I wanted to also be able to edit page X along with Alice, how would I do that?

I suppose what I am looking for is some sort of fine-grained access control list like on a Unix system, where I can set up users as well as custom groups to have different levels of access to different files individually.

Looking around, I don't think that feature exists here (or any other free wiki hosting site). Am I wrong? If it doesn't exist, would that be an easy feature to add?

Hi,

sorry, this is not possible at the time… The permissions are not "per page" but "per category" and one can not give permissions to individual users.
I do not think you could find such a feature in any of the free online wikis…

Some users suggested that admins should be able to create groups of users and give permissions to edit/modify pages to the specific (also one-user) groups. Perhaps this will be possible some day but not too quickly because this is not how Wikidot has been designed to.

Anyway I will try to solve this because I have found myself in a situation that:

• I have a private wiki, not visible to the public
• I want Alice to see page X
• I want John see and edit page Y
• I do not want them to see nor edit any other pages.

This I have came across when I have been preparing some articles and wanted selected users to see it or correct it without starting a separate wiki for it or using any other public wiki of mine.

So - ok, this will be solved somehow, but it is not a priority now. But I realize many people need it.

Hi Michal,

I have a request along similar lines:

- I want some pages of my wiki to be VISIBLE only to site members.

Basicly I propose a permission 'visible' to be added to the existing list
( edit, create pages, move/rename pages, delete pages, upload files, rename files, replace/move/delete files, show page options to)

This would enable me to hide some pages from non-members.

hi martin,

there are quite a few posts about this on various sections of this forum and all of them seem to be equally ignored… now some people might think this is a bad sign and michal, who once was around here all the time giving us good and bad news as it came, is ignoring us… but i think its because he's working on it right now and is going to break out of his silence with GREAT news that he has added this extra little check box to our options and we will all be happy

Just to add my 2 cents in, this would be a feature my group and I would like a lot as well. Anytime frame when wikidot 2.0 will be out?

How to change the permissions for a site.

Go to Site Manager, choose the Permissions menu.

i am not having site manager tab…

please help….

type in:
admin:manage
after the URL adress of your site ( excahnge the s"tart" to admin:manage

looks like http:// …..( your sitename ) ….wikidot.com/admin:manage

You should put in the link nto your side bar ( or top bar menu) like under
"internals" as the last recent changes , Site manager list of all pages and so on
Or let it be as it is and You only know how your pages are called…
