Wikidot.com can become a powerful and compelling tool by embracing various other web-based tools:

- mailing lists (perhaps along lines of Google groups, by extending forum categories with membership and email integration)
- calendar
- task-management system (by extending forums with states… I have lots of suggestions here…)
- print-to-PDF for a page or a category of pages
- integration with web-based IRC
- blogging (perhaps this is already possible using the FrontForum module)

This starts to cover a lot of what teams need to work together.

Hi,

a "workgroup" service is indeed what Wikidot might evolve into and the software structure does not limit the ways you can extend Wikidot itself.

There is one way I am seriously thinking about that would boost development of such extensions: make the Wikidot code open source. And this is one of the goals of this project but I can not tell exactly "when".

But certainly the future of Wikidot should be discussed and I am open to hear any opinion. This is aimed to be a community project anyway ;-). Thanx pieter!

Making wikidot.com open source would be good for its development, yes. My firm has always used the GPL or similar licenses for any software we could not easily sell.

The best way to develop wikidot in such a way would be, IMO, to use wikidot for itself. Thus anything that the community needs to develop or discuss wikidot should be provided by wikidot - including integration with irc, svn, issue tracking, etc.

Sequential printing of a range of pages or a whole wiki is necessary for my project. Clicking through all pages and printing them one by one is not an option. How do you collaborate online without the ability to produce printouts for meetings?
