Wiki Highlight : Internet Bible Catalog
(or, What You Didn't Know About Hartnell)
I suppose before I begin this, I should say up front that I'm not a Christian. That's not the "what you didn't know about Hartnell" part of this article. What you didn't know about me is that I have what can only be described as a "metric buttload" of holy texts. This naturally was a part of my original long study of human belief. That's long over, but, I still collect holy texts. Especially Christian Bibles, and especially Gideons Bibles.
You wouldn't believe the variation in Gideon Bibles. I have a hot-pink one for girls, a black "fake leather" one, even pure white one that has to be kept in a zip-lock bag or otherwise it any dust it collects will show. The prizes of my collection are a Bible written in Hebrew [1], a "trucker" bible, and of course, the shockingly pink Gideons. I have some very old holy-texts from other religions and some rare material from "start-up religions" that were mere flashes in the pan, but none are as cool as these three.
I have no idea what it is about collecting Bibles, but now I realize I'm not the only one, and that Bible collectors are not necessarily Bible bangers or fruits. (I am proof that someone who collects Bibles can also be a fruit.) This is due to a wonderful wiki on wikidot, the Internet Bible Catalog ( http://bibles.wikidot.com ), which has become my checklist for collecting. Unfortunately, I could not find a list of Gideon Bible types.
Nevertheless, I have to rate the Internet Bible Catalog as "very cool" from several perspectives.
1. It's about Bible translations. Very cool.
2. It's a very good use of the subdomain 'bibles'.
3. It's a great resource in general, for anyone interested in collecting Bibles.
4. Presentation is good, becoming top-notch.
Lastly, the Internet Bible Catalog uses open editing, so if you have a passion for collecting Bibles, maybe you could help, which I encourage you to do.
[1] The Hebrew Edition includes the little vowel marks, so I assume it's for kids, if someone knows if this is a standard feature of Hebrew Bibles (and thus I am mistaken), please let me know. It took a very patient Israeli about an hour to explain to me the fact that the "alef-bet" does not normally include vowels and that's why roman-letter transliteration is normally in caps (ala YHVH or YHWH). However, he was unable to tell me the standard for Christian Bibles, and thus this bit of trivia still escapes me.
Your Favorite Band Sucks III
(or, What's a Niche? II or My Evil Plan IV.)
Some of you may remember that I wanted to turn music.wikidot into a music mega-site and community project. Well, that was a mistake, and no one was interested anyway. However, some great niches are the bands that suck so badly — your favorite band. The Goo Goo Dolls for example, or the Greatful Dead, neither of which I understand why they have such a following. But maybe you do. If so, maybe you should start a wiki about them. Here's some other great niche bands :
- Nirvana
- Aerosmith
- The Beatles
- Black Flag (or Henry Rollins in general)
- Stevie Wonder.
- Lionel Richie :)
Well, you get the idea. If you like a band, then there's a good chance that someone else likes them as well. Unless they happen to be Retarded Slang, as their "Uke-ar" player (Hartnell) can certainly testify to. Their bongo player cannot be reached for comment. :)
A special note. I am willing to help out with any Beatles or Gen X related wikis.
Absurdly Unimportant - The Wiki
(or Absurdly Unimportant - The Wiki)
There's a kid in me that likes riding his dirt bike down very steep hills to see how fast he could go. You'd be amazed. While wind resistance on the average 11-year old is certainly a factor, you can (or so it seemed) hit speeds in excess of 25-30 miles per hour. This is absurdly unimportant. It also illustrates my passion for testing things.
To really test out wikidot, I have created http://unimportant.wikidot.com . Unimportant can be thought of as one big litterbox for articles that are, well, unimportant. The plan is to build it up and see what the wikidot software does. If at any time unimportant needs to be shut down (ie, becomes a drag on the server) it can — because nothing on it is really that important. I encourage you to participate and write about everything unimportant. Like your goldfish, or the time you got a pie in the face, or even a favorite jacket you loved but is no longer with us.
