Featured Wiki : The Hurl
I'm proud to say that The Hurl is on wikidot - there are few people who know the math to throw a cow over a castle wall and hit an oncoming army, but Craig Macomber is one of those people, provided he knows the weight of the cow, the height of the wall, the range of the army, and the cow remains relatively still. He is a true madman and is willing to share his hurling knowledge with you, and wikidot helps him do that.
In addition, he's done something I hadn't thought possible using a wikidot theme — combine the background of #top-bar and #side-bar into one big image. Great job.
The Hurl uses open-editing, so if you have some chucking knowledge, Craig Macomber says you're welcome to "pitch" in. (Normally I hate puns, but…)
Antiwikipedia
Wherever possible, I made it a point to mention Antiwikipedia because it was sure to become a mega-site and therefore help promote and extend wikidot. Well, we've lost Antiwikipedia. I'm not sure why, nor have I bothered to ask the creators why, even though it would be easy enough. They've deserted, and I wish them the best — maybe.
Be Proud, You Stink : My Evil Plan, Part #1
This is the first article in revealing my evil plan. It seems I've written it before, but I believe that I never published it. Oh well.
Some of you may remember a line of toys from the 1980's called He-Man and The Masters of the Universe. Wikidot is much like The Masters of the Universe. You see, the Masters of the Universe got that name because they all specialized in a niche. Man-at-Arms was good with weapons, Teela was hot, Beast-Man was the master of animals, Evil-Lyn was really hot, etc. Then there were a few that had questionable "specialties" : Stinkor was the master of "odor" and Leech was the master of er.. "suction."
On the internet, it's the same way. Millions of people are making a living from creating niche sites. Some of the most popular and profitable are "leeches" and "stinkors". In fact, in this issue, I highlighted, The Hurl, a wiki about throwing things vast distances. It's certianly not the topic of the daily news, but there are thousands of chuckers out there and given the power of wikidot, The Hurl will become the #1 website for chuckers.
And believe it or not, The Hurl is doing you a favor just by being there. Every new niche site created expands the reach and public awareness of wikidot. That's what being a publishing network is all about. There's a good chance that a chucker also has an interest in your niche and will find your site through the wikidot network.
I realize that many of us dream of creating a mega-site. I recently tried it. And I could have done it. Just starting out I had 10,000 pages of back material. It's true, the technical side of it stopped me (see last issue), but I realize now that my plan was not merely evil, but pure evil. (I promise to stick to moderately evil from now on.)
But the point is that success is not to be found by creating a mega-site. Wikidot is the mega-site. Together we are the Masters of the Universe (call me Stinkor). By creating our niche sites together on wikidot, we will become the Masters of the Internet.
The Corpse of 400
So, here I'm stuck with 10,000+ pages of my past projects before joining wikidot. Whatever shall I do with them? In future issues of the Madman, you'll find out. :) I may even… give the content away.
