I cannot login on Desktop (Dell, IE7, McAfee w/firewall)

I am attempting to create a wiki for one of my classes that starts up soon. I am able to access my wiki (perspicacity) from my laptop (Dell Latitude, IE6, McAffee) but not from my desktop. There is a fear that my students may encounter the same issue so some guidance would be great.

The dreaded message is:

"You have no valid security token which is required to prevent identity theft. Please enable cookies in your browser if you have this option disabled and reload the page."

I've driven my IT guy nuts today. We tried a variety of settings but nothing worked.

So far, we have:

• lowered security;
• lowered privacy;
• dropped firewall (temporarily);
• overridden cookie handling;
• stripped IE and reset defaults;
• installed firefox;
• tweaked firefox; and
• cried uncontrollably

ANY assistance is appreciated

The only thing that i can think of, if you have tried all those on your list, is Java, Is it enabled on your desktop machine?.
I'm assuming you are using a school network. These are usually really tied down and limited in there connectivity to the internet.

What age are the kids?.. if they are over five, ask one of them to sort it out.:-))))))))

Hi!

You have not written which system your desktop runs.
WINDOWS XP Sp2?
Windows Vista?
with MacAffee switched on?
For me it seems not only javascript in browser disabled, but a write /security problem for he IE to write a cookie..

Have you all rights to do so - means are you an admin on the desktop ?
-are there the "temp" directories available to hold the cookies

( I have forgotten the place where they are stored under Windows - was something like localsettings/Temporary Internet Files..
in german: C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Username\Lokale Einstellungen\Temporary Internet Files
in english: C:\Documents and settinsg}username\local setings\Temporary Internet Files
( I believe !

Could be this special sub folder is not existent (or not allowed to write for IE)

I just got the same thing.
Cos i just binned all me cookies
Having cookies disabled causes it.

Hi Educare.

Any luck so far? I'm fighting the same problem, and yet keeps unresolved. One question: on you desktop, have you got IE7? As you say, in your laptop you have IE6 and perhaps the behaviour between the two versions is different.

I suppose you have a wiki named, for example, mywiki.wikidot.com and a domain redirect, something like www.mywiki.com that points (via a CNAME record) to mywiki.wikidot.com. I bet you get the "You have no valid security token …" message if trying to login using you domain name (www.mywiki.com), but you get a clean login if using miwiki.wikidot.com. Could you please check this out?

If you get exactly this behaviour, we are both in the same situation, and I can't figure out how to solve it. I think it has something to do with the content of the cookies sent and the different names the same wiki has, but I don't know if this deals with wikidot server side stuff of ours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for delay; it's been a rough day. More info as requested (and sorry for not thinking of these earlier).

Phil, the computer in question is at home and not networked.

My Dell runs Microsoft XP Service Pack 2, Media Center Edition.

I found my Temporary Internet Files
at C:\windows\Temp

One other thing I should have mentioned is that in my search for free wikis and blogs I also was able to set up accounts at Blogger, PBwiki, and EDUblog. Again, I am able to access these sites on the laptop but not the desktop.

If it is a Java enabling problem, where do I check for that, please.

Any help, as always, appreciated.

Ok, so we are pretty sure something is screwed up with the desktop.

But we have a laptop that works.
so assuming that you can have both side by side, and they are running the same browser, you may be able to check, like for like with the two comps.

for IE check the tick boxes in tools »> iternet options»» advance settings.

to check java in firefox, you need to check tools»>content

while you are at it, check that the settings for cookies are the same as well.

Hi Ed,
I think to use the windows/temp directory for the tempoary internet files is NOT A GOOD IDEA!
This is dangerous if you are not the admin at the session…

I( use on my (home) dektoop windows xp svpack2 and have the internet pemporary files in MY USER-directory / local settings ( not my documents) defined:

in german: C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Username\Lokale Einstellungen\Temporary Internet Files

setup in the (tools / Internet options / general / browser history - setup seen. ( where the cokkies are managed…

As Phil said - have al look on both machines at this point if cookies are visible ( show files or so , or objects ?)

Think , this makes it perhaps clearer.

Other idea:
Could be MacAffee does a little unexpected job? ( I do not believe) .

i use on my laptop ( same system environment) english version with Mac Affee - works fine with IE 6
and us at home german Versiohn with IE 7 (install really by mistake)

I've ran across that error too, but when I tried to create a new page or rename an existing one. The error seems to be related to forbidden characters in filenames.
