If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
There's a new search engine in place (faster, in theory) but it has some teething problems and some sites are not showing search results. We're working on a fix with urgency.
Hope this will be fixed soon…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
It should work now - are you still getting blank search results?
Yes. I got only one result, when I introduced the word "statistike", and the word appears only in the title of the forum discussion. But nothing more (and for sure there are more pages with that word). I tried also with cyrillic letters (since it was possible earlier, without any problem), but now it seems that nothing works.

I really do not need a faster one. I need one that works. Please, put the old search engine back!
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
This will be fixed as soon as we can figure out why your searches don't work. The old engine was slow in ways which affected the whole Wikidot service, so we're not going back to it. The new one will work asap, this has the highest priority.
I do hope that the new one will be valid for cyrillic as the old one… Because if not, I really don't need it at all…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
Other than Cyrillic charset that not supported right now, other charset like Chinese Kanji and Chinese Pinyin are also not supported (already tested).
I hope the new search engine will support a large range of charset.
Well, Ivan, the old one did support cyrillic, but I dont know about the new one, since it does not work…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
I'm sorry my words must confused everyone… When I said:
Other than Cyrillic charset that not supported right now, ..
right now also means the new search engine… but the beta version of course… I'm sorry if I make confusion…
ooohh sorry, I never tested before, I'm only tested yesterday when the new search engine introduced… maybe others can inform better?

Hey, guys, could you at least put up some generic explanation to the users, so they will know that the search module cannot be trusted yet because of maintainance issues? Imagine a visitor trying to find a piece of information and never coming back under the false impression that the site is not informative enough…
This one works…
Or alternatively this one which allows you to search just your site or the whole web. I have set the target= to open the results in a new window but you don't have to do this. You can change the style of it via altering the CSS in the div and you can have the checkbox checked or unchecked.

Well done.
However, I like the way we can fine tune the Google Search Engine, search several sites at once but also restrict the search, for example, to the community forum section.
PS: I sent you an invitation to help manage the Wikidot CSE via regular mail.
Did you get it?
I do like the CSE - it's a very good solution for the multiple site search which you had in your example. My solution is definitely a more simple one but in some circumstances might be preferred to the CSE.
I had the email switched off but have now seen it and have accepted. Many thanks.

Rob, why it does not work if I change put istorijska biblioteka instead of strathviewconsultants?
[[iframe http://strathviewconsultants.wikidot.com/support:google/code/15 frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="350px" height="75px"]]
I don't get it… I don't know what I should do, where to put this code so this works… I changed "search only istorijska biblioteka" to the same but in Serbian, but it does not refelct… Where I should put this code? I guess this is at your site somewhere…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
Brunhilda, did you put the the codeblock on your page followed by the iframe? And did you select the correct /code/ number? It was /code/15 in my iframe because the codeblock was the 15th codeblock on that page of my site. But for you it is probably more likely to be /code/1. So for you the complete code would probably look something like:

followed by the iframe. In the example below I have assumed you have put the codeblock and iframe on your start page and that the codeblock is the only one on that page which is why it says /code/1:

I am sorry, Rob, but I don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about… :D I don't know what those codes mean…
I put your code here: http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site
Can I just copy this new code and put it in this search page? Do I have to make some new page?
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
It does work Brunhilda, even with Serbian search terms, and a working version of it for your site is at the very bottom of the long page here.
If you are not understanding the codeblock/iframe solution and if the other search is now working for you then perhaps you don't need to bother with my solution which was only given as an extra way of including google searches in a page. But I will try to explain it a bit more clearly.
You don't need to create a new page, it will work fine on your page http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site
Step 1. Copy the code below exactly as you see it below to your page http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site - do not change anything, just copy it and paste it into your page.
[!--
[[code type="html"]]
<html>
<body>
<form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search" target="google_window">
<div style="border:1px solid #FF0000;padding:4px;width:20em;">
<table border="0" cellpadding="0">
<tr><td>
<input type="text" name="q" size="25"
maxlength="255" value="" />
<input type="submit" value="Google Search" style="color: #131726; background-color:#BFA454; border:1px solid #dddddd; -moz-border-radius:10px;"/></td></tr>
<tr><td align="center" style="font-size:75%">
<input type="checkbox" name="sitesearch"
value="istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com" checked /> Search only istorijska biblioteka<br />
</td></tr></table>
</div>
</form>
</body>
</html>
[[/code]]
--]
Step 2. Then copy the code below exactly as you see it below into the same page http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site below the other code:
[[iframe http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site/code/1 frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="350px" height="75px"]]
Step 3. Once you've done that save the page. Then clear your browser cache
You have to do tis when adding or changing codeblock on your page. If you don't you won't see the result until the cache has cleared itself which is about an hour.
Step 4. Then press CTRL+R to refresh the browser page.
You will then see the search box on the page. But just follow the instructions exactly as I have given and it will work.
Once you've got it working we can then discuss changes you can make to it if you need to.

Thank you , Rob! I did steps 1 and 2, but I did not do the step 3 and 4, and that is why it did not apear…
OK, I would like to change this Search only istorijska biblioteka to Претражи само ИСБИ. I changed it i this row, but it doesn't work…
value="istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com" checked /> Претражи само ИСБИ<br />
It works now. I forgot to clear the cash again… :D
Now, this box looks good in Opera, in Chrome, in Safari and in FF, but in IE8 it looks awful. The Google Search box is uder the search box, and the letters and check box, as well as the lower red line cannot be seen…
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
Yes I see what you mean. This can be fixed with some changes to the widths.
1. In the line of the codeblock where it says:
<div style="border:1px solid #FF0000;padding:4px;width:20em;">
Change this to:
<div style="border:1px solid #FF0000;padding:4px;width:25em;">
2. In the iframe where it says:
[[iframe http://istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/search:site/code/1 frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="350px" height="75px"]]
Change the width to width="450px"
Then clear the cache again and refresh.
This has minimal effect on Firefox but does sort out the problem in IE. On my IE8 it now looks like this:
Rob
Rob Elliott - Strathpeffer, Scotland - Wikidot first line support & community admin team.
It works, Rob, thank you!
One more question: Is it possible to make it to search only the categories I want?
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
Yes it is. If you just wanted to search your art category for example, in the line of the codeblock that says:
value="istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com" checked /> Search only istorijska biblioteka<br />
Change it to:
value="istorijska-biblioteka.wikidot.com/art:/" checked /> Search only Претражи само ИСБИ<br />
Then clear the cache and refresh.
I've just tested it on a search for Манојло and it seemed to work OK.
Rob
Rob Elliott - Strathpeffer, Scotland - Wikidot first line support & community admin team.
And if I want to include more than one category, but not all of them? For example, I would like to facilitate the search in the categories art, art2 and video, but to avoid pages withing other categories….
Maybe this new Wikidot search machine can do that… ???
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
After a search through various blogs and sites it appears there isn't a way to make this solution search multiple categories or do the complex search that you were looking for.

Hello, again!
My search module works again! Thanks, Gabry, for informing me by PM about that!
Now, I would like to put one question: what are the new features of this search engine? Can I put so int can search only within one category (or more, but those I choose)?
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegan. - Paul McCartney
Congrats, Brunhilda, on your search engine being back to work. Mine, unfortunately, to put it plainly and honestly, is still una mierda.
I'm also curious to know about the advantages of the new search engine, for those whose sites are working properly. The old one was working fine for me (but then again, my needs are modest).
Site search engine does something very strange….
It has various pages, yet, I cannot pass to the second page…

Hi,
as a paying wikidot pro customer I would like to have some more transparency about the new wikidot search engine development. At the moment I use an info box on my search site page, where I apologize for the bad search function. Since my first question concerning the full text search one week ago nothing has happened. Please do something!
best regards
Stefan
I'm really sorry that search is broken on so many sites. We are working on it as a top priority. What happened last week was that we switched to a new search engine, Lucene, because the previous search was slow, and limited to individual sites. The reindexing of all Wikidot took a terribly long time, and when we switched to the new search, we found that some site searches were broken.
The problem was certain characters being wrongly processed by the reindexing. We fixed the indexing tool, and started selective reindexing of affected sites. But this would have taken way too long, so now we've rewritten the indexer so it runs at a decent speed. (It's a matter of building the index in memory and then storing it, rather than updating it in the database repeatedly).
Conclusion: (I need to check this with Piotr, but…) we are now reindexing all sites and the search will be working by today or tomorrow.
When I have more concrete news I'll post it on my blog. I don't think we handled the switch to the new search engine properly at all - at the first sign of trouble we should have restored the old search.
I am now database admin since databases were available ( 39 years) - and I know when the data counters are growing and growing and growing then the design from the starting point is no longer valid and secure and useful and storage and indexing HAS to be changed in some way. You can do it anyway - this will always disturb the running system and the users.
Sometimes a hard push with lots of murings in the user community is better than a long lasting task with (disturbing others) long answer-times
But this is only my oppinion. Could be this is not a good point of view in a big society…

Hi Pieter,
thanks for your infos!
Maybe for the future it would be a good idea to pronounce important site affecting actions like these to all site admins before starting them (and inform all site admins with infos like you have given in your posting). For example when you will switch to Wikidot 2 … ;-)
best regards
Stefan
@Stefan,
You're right and I know this. In fact Piotr has been blogging about the new search for some time but we miscalculated the risks of putting this into production, and were too slow in understanding just how many sites were affected, and too slow in responding once we knew.
Well, one of my jobs is to stop such things happening twice. From now on, when we make changes to the live Wikidot.com infrastructure, we make a risk assessment before, I'll blog about it, and we have a plan to intervene rapidly in case any problems occur.
As for Wikidot 2, I'll write a blog entry on that.
Oh please, no more changes!!!!
My search works interchangeably now. One day works, the other not. Can this be fixed? I think that if this cannot be fixed soon, I will remove Wikidot search engine completely and leave only Google one. This one maybe is not the best one, but at least it works every day….

Brunhilda, what changes do you mean? Everything works fine now. If there is something not working, please tell us.

As I told in mz previous post, the search was working one day, and next id didn't work. Then it worked one day, and then it didn't work. I hope that this is the end of problems.
I would appreciate the answer: is it possible with this new search engine to search only withing certain categories of the site, and not all of htem? I would like to limit search to some three or four categories.

I hope it's stable now, let us know if not. New pages will still be indexed at night only.
Searching on categories is a great idea. The indexing does not currently do that but we'll add it the next time we update it.
Then I hope you will fulfill my wish I posted a long time ago:)

Early morning European time (6-9 CEST) is quietest. We never need to bring down Wikidot but it's nicest to do stuff like database cleanups around these hours.
