Helmut,
I noticed that you recently set a fixed width of 600px somewhere on the homepage.
Unfortunately it does not look very nice on wide screens.
I guess another method would help achieve what you intended to do.
Best,
gerdami
In case helmuti is not around I have increased it again. I remember that there was some issue with the right column width a while back which is probably why it was changed. But I can't see any problem now with a bigger width, and it does look better on a wider screen.

Hi Rob,
I checked with
- FF.3.6.10 (OK)
- IE.7.0 and the IE Developer Toolbar: when I reduce the window size to 1024, the body is shifted down below the edge of the left side. It's just a matter of a few pixels: from 1030 and greater, it's ok.
I've only got IE8 where I am today so can't check it until I get home later, but I've made another minor correction which might or might not solve it in IE7.

Hi gerdami, Rob!
Sorry for the change mesaages…!
Exact this is the problem: most of my colleguas has only a laptop (15 " ) with 1024px x 768px or similar..
When I tried to show them our community yesterday morning - they show me that there is NOTHING except the welcome line as the header …. and after scrolling down (to the next page) there is the rest of the content to see.
We have forgotten to test the usability and visuabiility for small screen owners.
On wide screen this is not a problem ( I work with 1920 (home laptop) and 1600 (business laptop) .
And I am not sure - I often see very small Web Pages of cpmapnies for exact this reason.
I tried to fix the layout on a 1024 - or better a little smaller window fot exact this issue.
Bt could not fix the second main table - I think because of the forum - include…
We have nothing from a fine layout in wide screen if most of the people and visitors see a white screen on the content-wrap only. they are gone away in a second
What can you do for a better content layout on small screns?
Edit: now it is exact the (wrong) layout on a small screens, that the content is shifted under the left menu bar…

Another question - why is on the english Community ( this site) the left side menu bar "broader" than on the german community site (http://user-gemeinschaft.wikidot.com/) ?
I have lost the CSS-location where this is defined to have a look on it…

I'll look at the design tonight and fix it for small screens.

Rob, I tried something related to #page-content: *width: 100% (hack only seen by IE). I then tested with FF3.6.10, Chrome.6.0.472 and Safari.5.0, all with a window reduced to 1024: not perfect but visible. Sorry to interfere with you, Rob. Revert everything you want (I added /* gerdami: … */ in to the code.
Thanks gerdami - this worked as long as the new blog entry (with the big picture) from Wikidot has not damaged our layout again.
I tried in the past to limit the output of the inserted blog window to a spiecific width:
the included : http://community.wikidot.com/start:latest-wikidot-com-news
but this does not work as I thought.
The same with the inlcuded Forum activity:
start:Forum-Activity
Looks strange now and is wider than 1024 px again
Edit: I changed in the http://community.wikidot.com/start:latest-wikidot-com-news
the inner div with
(old )style="width:460px;overflow:auto; to
(new) style="width:360px;overflow:auto;
Hope this helps ( or have I calculated wrong? - from where is the big left margin of the left colukmns coming?
Edit2: Why is really the left side menu bar soo (unneccessary) wide?

I hadn't tested it on anything wider than 1600. I'll fix it.

That should be better now.

Just went through and cleaned a ton of things up. Will be doing some more later.
At this stage I've been focusing on fixing up the home page, and may move onto other pages once it doesn't look quite as messy as it did before.

The changes are good but I've restored the link in the sidebar to recent posts which you'd removed. This is purely for selfish reasons as it's the link I use the most!

Ah, no problem! I was originally going to add it as a sub-link under the forum one, as it seemed that it shouldn't be as large as the rest. However, I couldn't get it to display as well as I'd hoped.
I'll try messing around with it a bit more after work tomorrow (will leave link there but make it a bit smaller, and "tuck under" the forum link). Let me know if you approve after I've changed it :)

I've changed the sidebar again. How does it look now, RobElliott and Helmuti_pdorf ?

I find it ok so as it is - wIth the exception that a newcomer will search for "first visitors tips" like links to getting help like "FIRST READINGS" or "howto'"s or such issues and will not see the links on the left menu at the first moment and will not recognize the left menu resources as these readings.
I am affraid I would not search on a menu for a "help" funktion at the first visit.
A big search is ok and it is - as we know - the same as on the right top corner.. ( but first visitors will noT know this too - threfore we shnould keep it at this point a second time.
