Fellow wikidot'ers,

I've tried writing a document which contains a numbered list. In some items of the list I wish to enter some [[code]] tags for code blocks with e.g. XML source code. However, wikidot doesn't let me put the [[code]] tag on the same line of the numbered list item, because the [[code]] tag itself appears on the text. So, I have to enter a new line to write the code section. But this breaks the list numeration, because it resets back to 1.

How can I interpose sections of code blocks in between numbered list entries, without having the numbered items reset back to 1 each time I insert a code block?

That's a good question. I've never seen it done. It is absolutely necessary to have a <ol>? I can easily cook you up some [[span]] to make it look like an <ol>.

2. blah

1. blah
2. blah

Which one's the list? Well, one can do this :

1. blah

blah blah blah

2. blah

blah blah blah

It just requires numbering it yourself, some [[span]] and [[div]].

[[span style="margin-left:20px"]]2. blah[[/span]]

[[div style="margin-left:40px"]]
[[code]]
blah blah blah
[[/code]]
[[/div]]

Oh, OK. I was expecting some tag like "#[n]" or "#{n}" or something else, to manually specify "this is a numbered items entry, starting with number n".

No, but I see what you're saying. That might be a good idea. :) My way you have to enter of each number individually. —hartnell

I agree that this is extraordinarily frustrating. And it isn't only ordered lists; when I put a code block in my unordered list, the first bullet item after the code block winds up being displayed as an asterisk.

Nothing I do — apparently — changes that, not even putting the text that will be in the bullet after the code block first, then going back and entering the code block I want before that bullet item.

And it is making me MAD!!!

Phew. I feel a tiny bit better now.

I know, I know: it's a free service; I shouldn't be complaining. But is there no way around this? Will there ever be?

Is there some reason you're being cryptic? Are you trying to mention a W..d processor sold by Wil…m G..es company? If so (and I'm still not sure I guessed right what you were trying to say), sure — it has its problems, but at least when I interrupt a list I can tell it where to pick up the numbering scheme again.

I haven't figured out how to do that here yet.

Well, it is a pain, and it requires an image editing program, but I have pulled it off. I have created a large image with a suitable background color, and added the text I wanted to display in my code block (using a nice, mono-space font of course) formatted nicely. I then cropped the image, leaving about 10px around the outside of the text area, and saved it on a web host (I suppose you could use any image hosting site), then inserted the image in my list.

But here's the real trick:

The image must be placed on the same line as the bullet item (or list item) that it is to follow in order for it to work.

The following, for example, works fine for me (of course, this isn't as flexible as it would be if the code just worked the way we wanted, which is to say that changing the code block text the way I'm making it work means recreating the image, but I saved the intermediate steps anyway):

 # Topic 1.1 [[=image http://hostname.com/images/image1.jpg]]
  # Topic 1.2.1
   # Topic 1.2.1.1
   # Topic 1.2.1.2
  # Topic 1.2.2
 # Topic 1.2
# Topic 2

The above code actually preserves the numbering scheme for me!

I don't know why this works and nothing else I've tried did (perhaps it is some variation of a Definition List?)
