What would you change if you could design Wikidot from scratch?
Forget about limitations, web interface — unleash your creativity!!

Why am I asking? Because Wikidot gets rewritten as a "version2" and it is at the point that major suggestions that require deep changes could still be incorporated into this.

One of the features would be e.g. the whole new way of editing pages — instead of opening a box at the bottom of a page and scrolling to preview changes the whole page (or a section) would just magically become editable - either with the wiki syntax or wysiwyg.

Blogging will be a cool thing for sure. A universal page-query tool that would allow you to list e.g. all pages changed within the last week. And sort them according to the number of changes.

Wikidot currently targets computer geeks rather than casual Internet users. And has to change. It needs to be powerful, cool and a pleasure to use.

If you have any suggestions for the new version — just post it below! Thanks!

Just because you were talking about it: http://tool-man.org/examples/edit-in-place.html. Looks very cool (sorting too, especially with those handles).

But on thing is especially important for me - interface should be relatively similar to one from wikidot no.1, because people are conservative. You know…

Thanks once again for great application, which makes my life lot juicier! (sorry, I really don't know, if it is english, hope you understand :-)

Hi

Make it more easy to make a new page and find it afterwoods - new pages made can be hard to find if they are not "parented"

Furthermore I second these ideas from the thread:

  • TABLES - made easier to make and maintain
  • Drag and drop of pages on the sitemap function, which changes the parent page
  • New ways to redesign site structure
  • Make it easy to integrate with other applications
  • Easy-to-make user groups (along with the permissions). Like, Super Admin, Admins, Moderators, Privileged Users, Users and Guests as default.
  • Make it more more mobile phone friendly. I tried it with my Nokia 6280
  • Multilingual
  • In the meantime, let me just say that this is a wonderful tool you have created and I am grateful for whatever you do!

best regards Flemming

Hi,
i really like the non-linearity of TiddlyWiki, when you click on a new link, the content is added at the top of the current page, wich is contantly
updated as you surf the site. But it will not fit everybody…

I am fine without WYSIWYG.

It would be extra nice to optionally turn off the shortcut buttons, making the editor completely clean.

The biggest change I would make is simply UI.

The buttons you use in the wysiwyg editor are very bland. You might also note that there is a lot of support in there for people who do math work and media. Not everyone is going to use this and it's limiting to bury the stuff people do use in the stuff they don't.

If I could change anything about that I would make two changes.

First, I would use an icon standard (and there are several open source ones out there) with COLOR on the icons.

Second, I would allow people to configure the 'page editor' window by disabling the toolbars, or enabling them on a per-user basis, with a default for each wiki. If someone wants to edit with a toolbar that is not available, they should be able to choose more from dropdowns.

As far as I know there is no wysiwyg editor. wysiwyg= what you see is what you get. What I type is certainly not what displays on the page.

Good points on the tool bars. There are a lot of buttons.

Well, since you asked ….. I would like a greeting monkey. It would sit at the doorway to my wiki and greet people. You know, say hi, ask how a user's day was, maybe talk about bananas. :) Just kidding. :)

Here's the suggestions I can think of off the top of my head :

1. I second the expandable / collapsible code block.

2. Universal includes. Right now I have a class starting on monday. It would be easy to let everyone know with a universal include that appears on the top of every page.

3. Custom syntax highlighting. I'm working with many languages, some variants of other languages, and the number is sure to increase over time. I know this could be a pain, but it would help quite a bit. (help me anyway.)

4. Multiple news / blogs that can be linked. This explanation is not adequate, but, let me try. I have a news page for every section. If I could have these as the sections of a blog where they all automatically appear together in the main news / blog page, that would be great.

5. Search by category. (I may have missed this one.)

6. Have the category appear in the page title in searches, and at the html title, but not in breadcrumb navigation or in the page title. Right now I'm having to put the name in manually and thus breadcrumbs look like this : Basic4GL : Core Language of Basic4GL : etc…

7. Break up the "List all pages" automatically like mediawiki does. As it is now, I have so many pages "List all pages" doesn't list all my pages. :) Secondly, it's hard to navigate in one big file.

8. Have the option for the html title to appear as : [page name] - [category] - [wikiname].

9. WYSIWYG editing is a pain. Please keep wiki syntax able to be set as a default preference.

10. Automatically redirect to the new page when a page is renamed.

That's all I can think of right now.

About targeting the causal user… er… This is your baby, but I have to say you would try to attract people like me who like to write about what they do. The causal user is on youtube watching a monkey fall off a tree. In other words, they don't have anything to write about. Instead, they read what other people write when they want to know something. Which reminds me….

EDIT SECTIONS

My pages tend to get long so i second an "edit sections" feature. Preferably as a flag that can be turned off or on for each individual page. Maybe a flag that can be included in page's templates for example?

EMOTICONS

And emoticons: i know the idea is scary because it reminds of idiotic forum posts filled with smilies and roflcopters but in my case it would allow for good combo notation. Or in the case of a D&D-related wiki it would allow to insert a picture of a 20-sided die instead of writing d20. And so forth.

EMPTY ATTACHMENT FOLDERS

I also realised that once i move a file i've uploaded the folder created remains there - at least in the backup. Isn't that potentially bothersome, for a big wiki? How about including an option to remove empty file attachment folders for those who want to keep things tidy?

WYSIYWG EDITOR

Concerning the WYSIYWG editor, i'm fine with it as long as you keep it 3-lines-of-buttons at most, like the way it is now, otherwise it could get a bit over the top, and scare away the new, casual userface you're trying to lure.

TABLES

Finally, tables. I use the a lot, for combo notation,

Floater Input Float Type Recomended Floats (My) Easy Floats Comments

G,uf/df+p HIT

they look nice but it's really hard to edit after a while:

etc and that's only 1/3 of the table. It gets really hard to read after a while (also it was a pain in the ass to stick @@ in the begining and end of each line in order to avoid parsing) I don't have a suggestion on how to simpify this though, maybe "begin table" "end table" tags? , dunno really.

Hi.

I'll second (or third) the request for better table editing. Even with the advanced table tags, it gets cumbersome with a largish table. However, I have a suggestion for this: Use the existing syntax, but have a Table Edit Wizard or mode, in which the table is presented as bunch of tiny edit boxes, plus there is a "delete row" button on each row and a "add row" button at the bottom. This would be a sort of wysiwyg just for the table aspect.

By the way, I would argue against trying to do a wysiwyg editor. The problem with this is that it is never good enough, and you will sink all your development effort into it, letting all other features go by the wayside. Some very selected places, like the table editor (and maybe a tabview editor that works in a similar way) makes sense, but only for these sorts of gross layout features, and then just allow the guts of them be simple edit boxes where an editor just uses the existing syntax.

In addition to some of the comments earlier:

Drag and drop of pages on the sitemap function, which changes the parent page

** A function to list all pages without a Parent Page** the "module pagetree" function does not allow you to do this, and pages with no parent can just be lost from the sitemap.

Let's see. Well, first off there's my big list of compiled suggestions: http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-9890/official-suggestions-thread although they're not all that carefully thought through :P

Then, for some more elaborate and extensive suggestions:

  • Make it easy to integrate with other applications (CMS, forums, galleries etc.) like Joomla! and SMF (which already have a working bridge to connect the two). Possibly just for login (logging in to your wiki would keep you logged in when entering e.g. your SMForum in another database and vice versa) maybe also for userprofiles (meaning there's only one userprofile, shared by all applications. This would mean you would have to choose one as the appication to store your profile in, as the rest wouldn't be used).
  • Extend the flexibility in design.
  1. The way the layout works. What if I only want one menu, or maybe 4. What if I want to add my own special kind of top menu navigatin, in flash/java that the rest of my website is using, so that its easier to maintain the same style wherever a user goes.
  2. Easy change of theme/style, regardless of layout (type of menus etc.) except if you add something that is non-wikidot-default, like an own made flash menu as mentioned above. A good example of how to do this would be the Invision Power Boards. There, you can add new themes without uploading any content, because the new themes uses non-local files (links to already uploaded files), or just makes some simple changes to the css/html without adding any new pictures anywhere.
  • The WYSIWIG editor has been mentioned many times already, but I'd like to add this: there should be some extensive possibilities about it, at the very least the following, one for when editing/writing WikiPages, one for editing/writing ForumPosts:
    • Option in personal settings to have it on or off by default when editing/writing.
    • Option in personal settings to set No, Lite or Full Menu when editing as default.

The same options should be presented while editing, like a simple "WYSIWIG?" button, and a menu foldable on three different stages.

  • Easy-to-make user groups (along with the permissions). Like, Super Admin, Admins, Moderators, Privileged Users, Users and Guests as default.

Will add more as soon as anything comes to mind. Is there any perticular date as to when we should stop care to add any more big suggestions such as this?

And, just out of curiosity: Why doesn't any wikis use closing tags, like bbcode? Just saying, that things like lists and quotes would be a whole lot easier to do if there were closing tags. As the lists are now, I can't add a paragraph within the list, because then I brake it. Making a list by doing [*]<content>[/*] or [list]<content>[/list] would be a whole lot easier for me, but ye, I'm already very used to using bbcode. Just wanna know how a wiki benefits from this kind of syntax.

Being one of the new kind of folks you're trying to help/attract, these are the areas I'm currently struggling with…and don't readily see discussion or how to information:

  1. I have a closed site for collaborative work, but there are those who may be interested in our work and are directed to the site. I would love to allow a "guest book" kind of place where someone could send a comment to my e-mail (either Wiki or personal address) without their e-mail address being seen by others and without my e-mail being disclosed either.
  2. It would be awesome to be able to receive notices at our personal e-mail when there is activity on the site…someone sends a personal message or makes a post or a reply. Then, we don't have to go looking for recent changes…we'll just know what has been changed. Some blogs have this feature, and collaborative works would really benefit from such a feature. I thought I tried this…and may have to take a look again!
  3. Run your step-by-step instructions past someone who doesn't already know how to do it. I have found that many times the current instructions assume knowledge that I just don't have…yet. I'm slogging my way through, but have written enough instruction manuals to know how helpful it is to run things by someone who can give it that level of check out.
  4. Maybe I just haven't found it yet, but a glossary of terms would help newbies…

In the meantime, let me just say that this is a wonderful tool you have created and I am grateful for whatever you do!

Re: If you could redesign the whole Wikidot...

Some more suggestions:

  • Make it more more mobile phone friendly. I tried it with my Nokia 6280. In the built-in browser it looked pretty screwed up (but that thing screws up everything…) and log-in didn't work. In Opera Mini it looked pretty nice, but the log-in still doesn't work, you just get redirected to the same page. I don't think that log-in works on any mobile phone. Any chance this could be changed? (I presume that would require a whole recoding…)
  • Make sure the software is not made to just fit well with the wikidot.com site, but to fit well as an independent software suitable for most servers and hosts (e.g. PmWiki had many files with weird file extensions, causing it to have problems with the filemanager my host used). Should also work well alongside other applications, i.e. there's no need to put every possible feature for the wikidot application in one install. It's much better to have a very light install with many available extensions to add if needed. Some might want a Wiki capable of working as a CMS, others might just want a wiki, plain and simple.
  • Should be possible to upload several textfiles (like in a zipfolder) instantly turning them into pages. Very useful if I wanted to restore a backup I once made, but should also work even if you have content already, but you have a whole new category you want to upload. This would require some simple solutions for problems like identical pagenames and the sort though.
  • More multiediting actions, like: Change all category "car:.." to be called "automobile:..". Or merge (move into) category "bikes:.." with category "vehicles:..".
  • Could it be remotely possible to let someone create their own syntax? Maybe not adding new features, but switching what symbols do what, like making @@ be a heading, instead of ++.
  • Make certain things ine a theme extra easy to edit. Like how headings look like, and if they should look any different in a meny. And how borders are styled (you might not have borders for tables and pics yet, but you should, hehe), so that you can give them custom styling. I guess this is mostly up to the ones creating the theme, but the user should be notified somehow in the admin panel, by being linked to a tutorial maybe. Or every theme could include a helpfile by default, making this file accessable through the admin panel.

Hopefully it would be relatively easy to transfer the local installation (or backup) over to an online server, but I'm clueless about these things…

Now that I'm moving some sections out of GDN, seamless interwiki linking would be nice. From the manual, I took it to mean that only interwiki linking to predefined wikis were allowed, however, if you could automatically make it where every wiki on wikidot could be linked to each other using the same method, that would be great. Hello,

I just got here yesterday and really like what I see. The one feature I'd like to see added is the ability to use some basic html in addition to the wiki formatting.

It doesn't have to be all html code, or even actual html code. I'm on another website where we have pseudo-html - for example we can use <b> for bold and <i> for italics (and I think we can use [b] and [i] as well to simulate ubb), but it's not really html at all, it's something the site admin coded in manually to allow it (while still retaining the quality control to keep out malicious html code).

Also, I've seen some blog sites that do an autosave every minute or so on their compose screens. If that's not here already, I'd like to request that feature as well.

Thanks for making such a great wiki site! :)

First, Wikidot is one of the best wiki sites ever… but…

Now you are asking, I have some ideas, that are related to other already commented

1- Multilingual… There are still much people that are limited by their use of English
2- WYSIWYG? Its good, attractive, but maybe less effective that WYSIWYM (what you see is what you Mean) concept. Plain text editing should be kept
3- Permissions. Allowing the creation of working groups for certain specific tasks. I mean: Any ordinary user may ask permission to join a group where was created by a moderator. The moderator is responsable for carrying out the task, and he should be allowed to enrole or dismiss a collaborator of lower rank, and also to give credit (or discredit) to those that have performed the tasks

And, thinking on bigger colaborative networks, it should be great if users could be promoted after getting some points, gained with effort. This way, administrators could know which user can be promoted to be a moderator. Bigger rank moderators may propose tasks with bigger reward, while young moderators may have less confidence and moderate only small groups. Recent users can have tasks with lower degree of responsability, while experienced users may review other's work and express their opinion, raising the valoration of other contributions, getting also points for these reviewing tasks.

This is a great incentive for everybody to collaborate, and the administration of the community could be easier.

Well, here I am again with some new ideas. Lots of work, indeed, but if you are asking, this would be great stuff!

  • Some scripting language: This could be only allowed to few members, as it could do great harm! Just imagine:
foreach[sandy, mindy, paul, july]
     {newpage(friends,$); //adding a new blank page with that name in the "friends" category
     append(friends, $, "+++ ".$." Page:");
     append(friends, $, "This is my friend, ".$.);
     attach(friends, $.".jpg");
     append(friends, $, "[[image ".$.".jpg size="small"]]");
     }

Or creating parametrized templates:

foreach[sandy, mindy, paul, july]
    {newpagewith(friends,$); //adding a new blank page with that name in the "friends" category
     usetemplate(friends,$,template,$); //deploying the template which has a reserved value for the wanted name.
    }
  • If possible, Object-Oriented pages?: This may be unrealistic, but now, each page posess some files. Other objects can be added, like boolean flags indicating the status of a page (0 if in construction, or 1 if developed ), list of strings (name, address, phone number…) so constructing pages could be as easy as:
+++ $thispage.name() web page.

$thispage.name() is $thispage.age() old, and these are his
friends ([[script]] for (i=1; i<=thispage.number-of-friends) return thispage.friend(i) [[/script]]

this page is
[[script]]
if (thispage.construction==true)  return "this page is **under construction.**;
 else return "completed."
[[/script]]
  • Backlinks for each page. This can be implemented as a module: A short list of pages that point to the current page.
  • Autocompletion. How many times you remember that page you have created last week, but you do not remember its name? It would be nice if as I type, the possible existing categories or pages appear, so you do not have to check if that link existed or not.

Wow, imagination flies about the possibilities of wikidot!

Greetings

Backlinks for each page. This can be implemented as a module: A short list of pages that point to the current page.

Module Backlinks already exists : http://www.wikidot.com/doc:backlinks-module.
To have it on each page, just insert [[module Backlinks]] in the default template !

Hi,

I haven't been using wikidot for long, but it sure looks good so far. The only disappointment I have had so far is a lack of flexibility in site structure. I would really like to be able to do things like nest tags and nest categories. Also tagging categories or categorizing tags would be nice. I'm managing my organization mostly with the backlinks module right now because it is the only way to get the flexibility that I want, but it seems that there could be an easier way.

One other thing that would be nice is more flexibility with browsing through tags/categories/etc. For instance as far as I can tell there is no way to automatically list pages by multiple tags. What I mean by this is that when you click on a tag in the tag cloud, the page listing would include an option to narrow your view to pages that also have another tag: "List of pages tagged with tagA and tagB".

This was mentioned in another thread but I also would like the extra return line taken out from any headings.
Besides if anyone does need it, then they can always type them into their document easily enough.

I would like to have more control over the way the modules work:
eg. I don't like the fact that the a.hover text for the footnotes includes the text "footnotes" and "click to scoll to footnotes"
I would love it if we could actually see and alter how the modules behave.

Another MINOR thing in regards to that is that I would like to be able to put square brackets around my footnotes (the way that wikipedia do it) eg [3]
This is a nicer, cleaner look than having just a number and is not that hard to code.
But at the moment there is no way to add custom text to an already defined module.

The other thing that I would like to see is user-definable modules.
So that we could create an entirely new module eg. [[customwhatever]]

Appreciate any considerations,

BradLee

A better permission system. I'd like to be able to grant permission to edit specific pages to specific users/user groups. Also I'd like to have a better notification system, i.e. each user has a possibility to "subscribe" to a page via RSS or email and get notifications about all changes. Even better(but difficcult to implement?) would be a special tag that would allow to create a rss feed items, i.e. I have a piece of information that I would like to appear in the rss, so I tag it with[rss-item]test[/rss-item] tags.

First, I would like to say that… this is simply the best free wiki that I have ever used, and you can quote me on that. :)

I don't have any major changes to suggest since I really like the site as it is now. But I do have a few minor requests for things that I would personally like to see. Some of these may be slotted for premium services and I can certainly understand that, but I have nothing to lose for asking so here goes.

  • More permission options for categories. Specifically a "read" permission. This will let users create categories that cannot be read by default users … for example: A private staff area.
  • Dynamic content in the TOC. So instead of displaying headings only, we could enter an image for example. So if a plus sign will pop text in there, perhaps some other sign would pop anything that follows in there at the top or bottom of the TOC area, but within the box.
  • A Meta tag editor.
    • Meta tags are a very standard feature and while I do retain suggestions for how to improve the site, I can still live without those improvments, but the lack of a way to edit my tags is a complaint that I have. Please provide us with a way to better promote our sites through this very common standard. Many google features cannot be used unless google is able to verify you as the site owner. For example, we cannot use many of the features of Google webmaster tools: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview. Tools like these are essential for getting more visitors to our sites - that also promotes Wikidot. Meta tags do actually help for ranking too as they are a part of the entire ranking model and help with keyword saturation. I should point at that any measure given us to improve our visibility will improve our traffic. Likewise, any traffic improvement for us will also mean more exposure for wikidot. You could quickly turn those 15,500 major backlinks into 150,500 backlinks.

Thanks for reading.

I second the motion to include Meta tag editing and control. Among other things, google webmaster tools would be really useful.

I agree — meta tags for search engine optimization. I just bumped against this recently.
It would be great if we could focus search keywords this way.
Seems like this would also be helpful to engage directly with Google webmaster tools.

What would I change?

Well, I've talked it over with the union…we were hoping for a new water cooler and for the company fridge to be cleaned out.

I've eaten from the same cereal bowl every day - I think the food is so old, it's multiplying.

I reckon a customisable secure login window would be pretty good-it could still mention wikidot, but the bit about logging in not being the same as being able to edit could be canned if it dosn't apply to your site.

I don't like the idea of adding WYSIWYG - including keeping both it and wiki as a means of editing. I know both HTML and wiki editing quite well, but for some sites it's better to have one or the other. There should be an option that the wiki admin could choose one or the other as how the wiki will be edited. I like using wiki better for editing my wiki, but think that the wiki syntax in could be improved some.

There are a few changes I would make:

  • I would like to use a Level 1 Heading for the titles of pages, but can't because it automatically rendered in italics and can't be undone.
  • The 'Exclusive Lock' could be an option. Unless, I'm doing a major edit on a page, I don't really have a need for it.
  • Along with many others, I would like there to be more themes. I have Gila with a sidebar and would like it to wrap around the top of my wiki.
  • I think that there should be an option on whether to show how many page revisions there have been at the bottom. I'd like it to show the date and time that a page was updated in a similar fashion: Last Updated 03 February 2008 18:00. Because of time zones, the ability to see exactly how many hours ago it was updated by hovering the cursor over it would be be nice.
  • Lastly, the ability to edit small sections of a page would be great. If it is a long page, I might want to only make one sentence more coherent and won't want to go through the whole article to find it. For instance, I might want to change the spelling of Mt. St. Helen to Mount Saint Helen in the section about the effects of its 1980 eruption. The page would be better managed if there was the ability to edit small sections of it.

1: You can change this in css.
2: two people editing the same page at the same time? Not a good idea.
3: Just extend the theme with css. (or write a new one to your specific requirements)
