After a few Google searches on "CSS numbered lists and headings" and a few readings and experiments with the Stylish addons for Firefox, I wrote this Howto Autonumber headings and ordered lists.

The old theme has been in use since the beginning of time itself (aka, the creation of Wikidot), and was long due for a revamp. Now the community site is visually appealing and thus more user friendly to look at.

MembershipByPassword and MembershipApply

These modules are now deprecated by the Join module. That means that you should go to your wiki or Wikidot website, and delete those modules. Put [[module Join button="Join this site!"]] on the page instead! :)

Advanced use - modify the button using CSS!

If you would like to add your own custom look to the button, you can define a class for it and instead, it will just be rendered as a normal link (as you can see below this paragraph when you log out of your account). That means that you can custom-style it using CSS to look however you want it to!

Unfortunately, this module does not work in-line, so you can't do something like this:

Head on over to the Wikidot.com Blog and read the List of WeNeeds that people just like you have asked for.

At the time of writing there are 89 weneeds with at least 2 votes, and 12 weneeds have been closed since Wikidot has added those features for us! Things like %%comment_edited%%, to tell us when a page's comments were last modified, weren't possible a short while ago!

Top weneeds that are yet to be fulfilled, with a whopping 23 votes (you can make it go even higher) are:

• Private Categories within a Public Wiki
• More Advanced Permissions System based on Groups of Users

And with these not far behind on the list:

• Set a page's creation date to be in the past or future (21 votes)
• Long forum topics to be split into multiple pages (20 votes)
• Ability to manage every page from one, central location! (16 votes)

So, what do you need? Let Wikidot know about it!

User gerdami has been caught to be lacking the knowledge of Post Blocking in forum threads.

gerdami has been passing off as a "Wikidot Guru" for nearly three years now, pretending to be knowledgeable of both the Wikidot.com Wiki Syntax AND the functionality of its forums.

That is, until ErichSteinboeck caught the fraud out in the act.

As quoted directly from the Wikidot community forums on July 24, gerdami unveiled the question that would ultimately become his downfall:

Is there a way to close a forum thread ? I.e. no more posts in a discussion but still readable.

But as gerdami has been so sneaky in convincing others of his Wikidot-operability, he fooled even Wikidot CEO pieterh. Due to gerdami's reputation, Pieter was led to believe that such a feature was non-existent; as shown when he replied that “it's something I've often wished for”.

If it wasn't for Erich's sharp-wit, we'd not have known the better of the falsified guru status. He knew right away that the feature in question was already in existence:

In the thread, click on “more options” and then “posting block”.

“Oups” is the first thing gerdami said after being confronted with this. He even admits that we should “downgrade [his] karma status from guru”.

With hope, Wikidot.com will update its Karma algorithm to remove this fraud exploitation. In the meantime, gerdami has been stripped of his Wikidot Karma status and Pro account: gerdami

Whenever you find such a "press notice" about Wikidot - either in the internet or in a newspaper (better!) - please insert an information in a new press notice ! This collection is very important to demonstrate Wikipedia and co. the "social relevance" of Wikidot and his hosting service.

Today we have successfully installed a new, improved uploader. Although it looks simple, it required really a lot of work, including server-side software upgrades, discovering and fixing many quirks and problems, cross-platform testing, changes to the page revision handing, notifications etc. — but I believe the uploader is much better than the previous version (which is still available) and still is flexible enough to be improved.

A few facts:

• It is flash-based. HTML-only forms do not allow multi-file uploads in an easy way, progress tracking is also tricky.
  • Therefore Adobe Flash 9 or 10 is required.
• There is progress-tracking for each of the files and error-detection.
• It is aware of any size-limits on your site and informs you about them if e.g. files are too large before you start uploading.
• We have tested the uploader with large number of small files and individual files up to 50 MB.
• Reliability of the new uploader is far better than the previous one.
• Multiple files can be selected in the File Dialog easily by pressing Shift or Ctrl (Cmd on Mac). You can also add files by clicking "Select files" again.
• If Flash is not detected, the "old" uploader is available by default.

Open issues:

• We have seen some problems with Linux Fefora 8 + Firefox 2 + Flash 9: the flash object did not render properly and produces connection error on uploading.
• There is no drag&drop, a separate browser plugin would be required. A nice one is BrowserPlus, but we decided to use Flash-based solution because Flash is much more commonly used. We could however create a BrowserPlus variant of the uploader, this is (from what we learned some time ago) even more reliable, flexible and easy to implement.
• File managing still needs improvement — uploading files is easy now, moving/deleting/renaming lags a bit.

The new uploader is available to Pro users and their sites at the moment, we will enable it for everyone else in a month. I hope it will help you better use your storage space!

Last night, Google and Wikidot signed an draft agreement which foresees:

• Wikidot Inc. shareholders will receive an undisclosed amount of Google shares
• Wikidot services will be fully integrated in Google as of 1 August 2009, i.e. just 3 years after Wikidot's entry in service
• Wikidot's founder, Michal Frackowiak, will become Chief Operation Officer (COO) of Google Polska
• Wikidot will be fully integrated into the Google Docs suite as soon as possible
• Wikidot services will be fully localized as from 1 January 2010
• All Pro accounts will be converted into Pro+ accounts in the next few days
• All free accounts will be converted into Pro Lite accounts

Eric Schmidt, Google Inc. and Michal Frackowiak, Wikidot Inc believe that both companies and their consumers will benefit from the deal.
