Wikidot is used by many teachers or students in free , but often private, wikis with a special status: "educational" - which goves some good conditions for free wikis but only for such wikis used by universities or schools (will be checked at the upgrade).
You will find these conditions on the dashboard of your site manager on your fre wiki and also the "educational upgrade" button with some fields to fill in ( like school/universities email/link a.s.o.).

But a warning: if you are using such free educational wiki you can loose some good conditions if you upgrade later to a pro light / pro account and have perhaps less conditions as before on your upgraded pro-wiki than.

A '''page history''' shows the order in which changes were made to any editable page, the difference between any two versions, and a menu of check boxes for selecting only changes like Show page changes:

• ALL ( default)
• source changes
• title changes
• page name changes
• tags changes
• metadata changes
• files changes
• Revisions per page: ( number of lines per page).

A Page history of changes" is sometimes called '''revision history''' or '''edit history'''. It is accessed by clicking the "History" button at the top or bottom of the page, a complete separate screen opens under the selected page and its "page option buttons".

If you click on the "History" button at the bottom of thi page you will see the starting revision number 0 ( zero) of the 2. April 2015 with the flag "N" and my author-id ( and no comment sorry for that).
And later the changes are made to this page with tags ( "A" ) or source changes "S" )

Using a history screen:

On a history screen:

• All past changes to the page in question are listed in reverse-chronological order.
• To view a specific version, click on the "V".
• To compare:
  • an old version with the current version, go to the old version, click 'on the button left button to select the old revision for compare, the newest is clicked on the right b utton by default'.
  • two specific versions, click the left-column radio button of the older version and the right-column radio button of the newer version,
  • and then click the "Compare versions" button:
  • there will be shown in an extra source window a merge fo the 2 sources with the missing/new/changed test "underlined"
• to view only the "Source" of such a revision number - click on the "S".
• To undo (revert) your own or someone else's last edit, click on the "R" button of the selected revision.
  • you create a ne revision of this page with a new entry in the history and the old content of the selected revision.

Edits are shown from newest to oldest.

Right from the selection radio buttons you will see for every revision:

• little flags noticing which changes are made ( New, Source only, Tags a.s.o)
• The 3 buttons "V", "S", "R" ( View, Show Source, Revert)
• the author of the change (user-id - link)
• the date of change
• and a little comment from the edit window

Notices

Old revision version can be seen by clicking on the "V" of the revision line… but this is not trrue in case of used files or "includes of other pages" : because the images of the od version ( their" files") can be today changed , deleted, renamed or removed and the same situation can happen with included other pages - their version can be chaned in the meantime.

Thanks to "wikipedia" - "history help" page - the content of history in Wikidot is a little be different to wikipedia, but the sense and need is the same.

Never forget that - as long as the page exist - there is nothing lost of the source!

You will need to create a landing page for visitors without the View permission. That landing page should be called category:_public.

You can restrict the view permission to the following groups of visitors to the site:

• anonymous
• Wikidot members ( logged in)
• Members of the wiki alone
• Admins and mods have always the permission to view all…

The category:_public page (note the underscore at the beginning) is a hidden page that is displayed only if an unauthorized visitor tries to view a page in the private category.

You can add your own text to the category:_public page landing page explaining to visitors why they cannot view that page, for example

To start the "watching" of a complete site :
there are on every page at the bottom right corner ( short over the page option buttons - look on the bottom of this page!) links which says :

"Start watching: site community.wikidot.com | category glossary | this page [?]"

click on "site community.wikidot.com " and this will add the site to your list of watched sites..

Notice:
the setting of a "complete site" on your warching list "removes" all "single PAGES" of this specific site out of the watching list of pages.

Wikidot stores pages in categories and when you use data forms, each page is one "object". So one category can have one data form, that applies to all pages in that category.

To create a new data form, edit the _template page in the category and add a [[form]] section.

Modules are prebuilt program-software pieces waiting to be called by your commands in any wiki-page and is replaced in the rendered output of the page with the output of the mini-application.
Some modules have the possibility in the output to be changed to your wished layout, some not;
some big modules reads all your saved pages-content , some only the forum…

In Wikidot this list of page-titles is created either

• directly on a page with the inserted command-line [[module Backlinks]] - perhaps over a live _template- or
• manual called (and temporary created ) with the usage of "page options buttons"
  • (1.) "+options" and
  • (2.) "backlinks".

Warning: "external links" (i.e. over [*http://user-gemeinschaft.wikidot.com/glossar:backlinks Backlinks] would be not listed - they are neither found nor stored (in the wiki-database).

In Wikidot, "category" refers to what other wikis call "namespaces". In other wikis, "category" refers to a grouping mechanism where pages with a similar subject are accessible from an index page.
Soft Categories are made in Wikidot, as in MediaWiki, by using Links to category pages.

1. With (internal) "Links" on any page to the "category" page it belongs to.
2. With a module Backlinks module (showing the Children!) on such "category" pages.
3. With a little module ListPages showing all %titles%% which link_to="." ( this single page)

Let's show some cases here (copied from the doc:backlinks-module).

You can use the Backlinks module to make soft categories – simply create pages in the namespace "category": e.g.,

• category:cars
• category:bikes
• etc…

Each of these pages could have a description of the category and the [[module Backlinks]] that would list the pages linking to this category: page:
And within the pages you want to add to specific categories you would put links to these categories, e.g. at the bottom:

[[[category:cars ]]], [[[category:bikes]]]

Moreover, if all your category pages, i.e. category:cars, category:bikes etc. include a link to a page called category:all — it is a quick way to put the backlinks module in the category:all too and have a list of all categories.

Note

This glossary entry mixes both notions of categories – soft and hard – by putting soft categories into hard categories.
One could have used category_cars, category_bikes, in this case, which is stored in the default category.

Any page with a unix name beginning with an underscore is a hidden page in a wikidot site, and these pages are usually used for administration, system or maintenance purposes within a wikidot site's structure.

An example is a category's live template page, which looks something like category:_template.

• By default, these pages do not appear in ListPages module output
• By default, they are not counted as part of the %%total%% in CountPages modules
• They are not auto-numbered, even in an auto-numbered category
• You can not create a hidden page using the NewPage module

The NewPage module has been designed to strip out any underscores that are entered into it's text field, to prevent new users from accidentally creating a hidden page. Therefore to create a hidden page you must use your browser's address bar and enter the intended URL in there. If the hidden page does not exist, a link will appear on the page that will allow you to create it.
