Fair use, the US law which gives an individual the right to use portions of a work for critical review (think movie critic showing clips of a movie he's reviewing) wouldn't apply [in your wiki].

However, you should know that music over 100 years old is no longer under copyright whatsoever and is now in the public domain. That's a hard and fast rule you CAN apply.

This gets fuzzy here : If someone records an exact version of the public domain work today, they own the copyright (automatically!) to the recording itself — though they don't own the copyright to the public domain work. So, you CAN record your own exact version of the work even after someone has done this and have your own unique copyright to the recording.
