I've also been waiting for this for over 6 months, but I never said anything as I saw others had. If the hold up is still that you think few users would want this, I thought I'd better jump on the bandwagon and add a "me six".

I don't want this to turn into an online petition or anything, especially since I am really enjoying the use of this free service however the facility to add meta tags to a page would be great for unlocking the web admin tools and I imagine that it would unlock a few other bits and pieces as well.

The sitemap is great, but it still has the tag cloud as a descriptor. I might just get rid of the tags - but then without the random feature, there's no real viable way of browsing the site.

sitemaps are useful but you need Google webmaster tools to see the searches against your domain etc.

I'd still like to see the ability to verify (either through meta header tags or a google_random_.html page) added to Wikidot.

It could be. However I've tried every trick I can think of, and it doesn't work (it has to be in the top level domain, i.e. facts.wikidot.com/thispage.html instead of in a subdirectory)

If I'm honest, I think Wikidot is great, but this and a couple of other limitations do really restrict the usability of my site, and it's of such a nature, that I'm likely to get a huge amount of bounced hits because of it.

If there would be any way to implement this, I'd be over the moon. Even just a control panel option that lets you create one html page of your chioce would be great.

Of course the other thing I realy want is a "random page" button. If it would be feasable, I'd happily write the code myself and submit it?

I am not sure if this would help -

but you can always create a html file ( NOT a PAGE!) on your local machine and upload it as a file attached to any local page of your wiki.

And:
you can embedd the link of the file ( button files - info) on any page ( or iframe it )

If you want to run a java or javascript than you should rename it to jvs ( instead of htm or html) .

With google webmaster itself I have no experience.

Could be this is the reason nobody answers you here …?

If we could add pages to the server that use a .html extension, this would work. I created the page http://religious-evolution.wikidot.com/google71e404e61f153186-html, which doesn't work because it ends in -html instead of .html. Wikidot could let us create these pages or allow us to add meta tags. Adding meta tags sounds like a better long term solution, because its usefulness is not limited to Google webmaster tools. Just wanted to add that the alternative to addding the meta tags to head is to create an url
of the form

http://evdonaucity.wikidot.com/googled999999999999999.html

That currently gets mapped to a 404 at the webserver, not sure which solution is simpler to implement. The meta tag enhancement is not specific to google, so it's probably the preferred way of doing it.

A lot of search engines make use of the meta description tag (incl. google and ask.com). So it would definitely be useful to have control over it. Not to single anyone out, but here's a great example of a wikidot site that appears on google with completely useless descriptions of its pages: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:http://zeroinfluence.wikidot.com/
Google gave up and just put a tag cloud as their description for each page. Almost equally useless, some other sites get their navigation bars used as descriptions.

Granted, there are some easy things they could do to get better descriptions, like including the phrase "Zero Influence Wiki is " on their page. But for sub-pages, it usually doesn't make sense to use a phrase like that. That's where meta descriptions come in.

So, when is version 2 coming out?

No, it's not necessary, just really useful if you want to see/manage how your site is indexed. If you move it to wikidot v2, do you have any idea when v2 will be finalized?

Is the GW functionality that necessary? I would most like to (most likely) postpone it since it is useful to a very few users only and move the "custom meta tags" to the Wikidot v2 which is under development.

As regard the Google Analytics Service:

go to the Wiki Site Manager (http://yourwiki.wikidot.com/admin:manage)
at the bottom of side menu, click on 3rd party tools
and then on Google Analytics
follow instructions displayed…

My first post isn't a question, it's a request. I already know it can be done and that it's not difficult. Like I said, I'd like to use Google Webmaster Tools, which allows management of indexed content among other things. Very useful.
