Hi Erich (and Helmut),

yes I know I can reference html files from other servers in my iframes, and I will do so. But not everyone who creates a wiki here has or wants to have webspace somewhere else, or he/she only has webspace with popup or framed advertising, or webspace with very low connectivity. I think there are several scenarios where the embedding of separate html documents is useful. So Wikidot shoudn't suppress this suddenly without any note (for example because security holes have been detected with default delivering of text/html).

just my two cent and with best regards
Stefan Münz

OK. let him use the new Wikicomplete from hartnell…. :)

The idea is easy - there are a lot of sites "hosting wikis" ( have a look on hartnells wikicomplete omn the right top…

Than he can iframe the "foreign" flash or other html code .. I did it this way on my tutorial side ( now private until going public)

> make a little (Public wikidot!) site under a different name … to copy the code examples

Are you sure that works? I tried, but failed.

And on the same post by Gabrys he writes:

Different wiki on Wikidot is unsafe the same way as the same wiki.

The idea is a very good one… I do not believe that it was YOUR example of usage.

The solution will work (in future too I believe):

put your code files out of your site (subdomain) and embbed them( by iframe ) over the URL from a different http adresse than YOUR site

You have only to change the URL adresses in the iframes.

Means - make a little (Public wikidot!) site under a different name ( or use your OWN (readable!) server for such html code) to copy the code examples..

I guess you know about the only known workaround — see Gabrys post from 3 May 2008, 10:57:

So I would recommend users to use other that Wikidot HTML upload service to achieve iframing HTML files from Wikidot sites. At least till we implement this.

Hi,

I was looking for a possibility to integrate "that's the was it looks" demos for html/css/javascript code examles within a wiki. Somewhere out here I found a tricky solution: just upload a file which has no html file extension, for example "example.file" (which in fact is a regular html file). Then create an iframe with "iframe example.file". Wow - that worked fine, and I could present my code examples even within a tabbed interface (toggling between code examples and results).

But now it doesn't work anymore. The content of "example.file" is no longer delivered as text/html, but as text/plain. So all my work with code examples which allow to switch between code and "that's the way it looks" was in vain :-(

Possibly nothing would have been changed in the wikidot server configuration if I hadn't posted a question to moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus - because of some embedded flash videos. I asked for a chance to break the 10 MB file upload limit, and I mentioned the context of my wiki. I didn't get any answer to that question - and now my tricky solution (which had no bad intentions) is levered.

I'm a bit disappointed about that. OK, wikidot farms are free and without guarantees, and I'm very enthusiastic about its features and functionality. I even have plans to write a book about the wikidot platform, because I think it has very great potentials. The experience I described was the first negative one here at wikidot.

best regards
Stefan Münz
