The function is the same. Technically you're just changing the URL of the page. Think of it this way:

Renaming a page assigns a new name to a page, but leaves it in the same category (old-page-name to new-page-name or category:old-page-name to category:new-page-name. Reasons you might want to do this:

fix a typo

make the name more descriptive

make it shorter/easier to remember

to create a category that does not exist (rename a page from page-name to newcategory:page-name).

Moving a page assigns it to a category (like the example I posted above) or moves it from one category to another. Reasons you might want to do this:

Moving a page that was never in a category to begin into an existing category.

Moving a page to a different category if it was originally placed in the wrong one.

Does this make more sense now?

-Ed

Thanks Ed! But what is moving pages? I don't know what that means, never mind how to do it. Help is still much appreciated. Thanks!

Reanming a page changes the URL name of the page. This is mainly useful for assigning a page to a category or moving it to a new category.

For example, you might want to assign a page to a category you created called "tips".
Rename:

helpful-hints

To:

tips:helpful-hints

This changes the URL of the page to http://yourwiki.wikidot.com/tips:helpful-hints

This does not affect the page title, only the URL. Remmber to expand the +show dependencies link first to make sure any pages that link to the one you're renaming can be automatically fixed (if possible).

-Ed

What does

move/rename pages refer to?

It sounds obvious, I know.

Is renaming pages, just changing the title of the page?

And what about moving a page? Moving a page where? How do you move pages? I don't even know what move pages means.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks!
