<p>Hi Rhymedawg!</p> <p>There are lots of people willing to help you (as they have helped me) and I'm sure no one will take umbrage with your cause. There are lots of different sites from religion to iphone hacking and we all live in (near) perfect harmony here. To get help though, I think you'll have to be a little bit more specific about what kind of customization you are after.</p> <p>Just a tip: I quickly glanced at your site and saw that you're hosting a list of websites that are trafficking copyrighted material. It can easily be used in a way that you didn't mean to.</p> <p><em>(Edit: removed my personal opinion about music industry, this instead could be a little more helpful for you)</em><br /> You may want to check out external themes at <a href="http://themes.wikidot.com">http://themes.wikidot.com</a>, click at theme you like and you'll see instructions on how to install it. If you're unsure, you can always clone your site (manage site -&gt; misc actions -&gt; clone) and do experiments there before applying them to your main site.</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-18">The Community / New Wikidot sites</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200614/stop-music-theft">Stop Music Theft</a>

<p>I just started<a href="http://www.stopmusictheft.com/">this site</a> and I need help developing it. For instance, I would like to do some customization of the theme and don't know how to do that.</p> <p>If you are sympathetic to what this site is all about, an experienced Wikidot editor, and would like to help, please contact me.</p> <p>Just a note: Many tech-savvy people philosophically favor open source everything including music and thus may take umbrage with the very thing I am trying to accomplish which is to stop the theft of intellectual property. But, I ask you to think about it in the case of songwriters. I make a lousy living writing songs. I love to do it, so I am going to keep doing it. However, if so much music was not being stolen these days, I'd actually probably be making a living wage. Many of my songwriter friends have just given up. If this theft keeps up—the music is going to stop. That may seem incongruous when you see Cristal-slurping mega artists in the media every day, but trust me, all the little people in the music business like the writers, musicians, recording engineers, etc. are getting killed economically because so much product is going unpaid for.</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-18">The Community / New Wikidot sites</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200614/stop-music-theft">Stop Music Theft</a>

<blockquote> <p>I beg to differ on that one. Percentage heights do not seem to work with iframes.</p> </blockquote> <p>I hold my position. The reason lots of results show on Google is because people seem to think an iframe takes the shape of its content, not the content it's within (i.e. they don't realise it behaves as a &lt;div&gt; in terms of height percentage).</p> <p>Show me a page where iframe height misbehaves, and I will explain why it actually isn't misbehaving.</p> <blockquote> <p>It will be interesting to see how they implement the [[html]]] module because I bet they will run into exactly the same problems that everyone else (wikidot or not) has with this</p> </blockquote> <p>Well, if they use the php method I described, it should work fine. In my opinion, it would put extra strain on the Wikidot Engine, and perhaps Wikidot will need to upgrade their resources. But we'll see what happens.</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200354/iframe-height">iframe height</a>

It's possible with javascript, but only if the iframe's domain matches the parent frame's domain.</p> <p>How is it done, I hear you ask? The javascript on the webpage can be programmed to detect the length of your iframe's scrollbar in pixels. The javascript in turn changes the physical height of the iframe to match the scrollbar height (effectively eliminating the scrollbar altogether).</p> <p>As you can see, it is not straightforward, and we would need the Wikidot to implement the javascript to do this.<br /> But even if they <em>did</em> implement the javascript to do this, it would only work on pages in the <tt>wikidot.com</tt> domain (meaning, it can't work with the <tt>wdfiles</tt> domain, or any other website).</p> <p>The only other way this could be done is with PHP; if the Wikidot engine identifies the height of the iframed webpage <em>before</em> it compiles the page, then it would be able to compile the page with the correctly specified iframe height. This, I believe, is what they're going to do with the [[html]] module</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200354/iframe-height">iframe height</a>

<p>Hi Ed,</p> <p>Think of an iframe as being identical to a &lt;div&gt;. It's a special kind of &lt;div&gt; which displays other webpages.</p> <p>Now, by default, a &lt;div&gt; has height of 0px. But if you put some paragraphs and images inside of it, the &lt;div&gt; will stretch in height so that the content doesn't flow outside of the &lt;div&gt;.</p> <p>If you specify the height of a &lt;div&gt; as a percentage, then it will change the height into a percentage <strong>of the element the &lt;div&gt; <span style="text-decoration: underline;">is already inside of</span></strong>.<br /> For example, let's say I create a &lt;div&gt; block that is 200 pixels in height (named divA). Then I put another &lt;div&gt; block inside of divA (this block is named divB). If I make divB have a height percentage of 25%, then it will be 25% of the element it is inside of. Because it is inside of divA, its percentage will be based upon divAs height, and therefore be 50 pixels (25% of 200px).</p> <p>Likewise, if you have a div block that is the only thing on the page — that is, it is not contained by anything — then it's height percentage is based upon your browser's window height. <tt>height: 50%;</tt> will become 50% of your window.</p> <hr /> <p>Your iframe heights were always working perfectly… you didn't need any hacks to get them working.</p> <p>The reason you had a problem with them is because they were inside of a &lt;div&gt; that had no specified height (<tt>&lt;div id="page-content"&gt;)</tt>.</p> <ul> <li>When a &lt;div&gt; has no specified height, then its default height is 0px.</li> <li>If there is no paragraphs or images within your &lt;div id="page-content"&gt;, then the block has nothing to make it stretch in height (that is, it remains at 0 pixels in height).</li> <li>Let's say the only content within &lt;div id="page-content"&gt; is a bunch of &lt;divs&gt; with percentage-height values</li> <li>When you specify the height of an iframe to be 25%, then it becomes 25% of zero, and therefore becomes zero pixels in height itself.</li> </ul> <p>Let me demonstrate this:</p> <table> <tr> <td style="width: 50%; padding-right: 1.5em;"> <div style="font-family: 'Andale Mono', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: 12px; border:2px dotted darkgrey; background-color:#FCFFDF; margin: .5em; margin-bottom: 2em; padding: 0 1em;"> <p>&lt;div style="border: 5px solid BLACK; height: 100px;"&gt;</p> <p>&lt;div&gt;</p> <p>&lt;div style="background-color: RED; height: 50%;"&gt;<br /> &lt;/div&gt;</p> <p>&lt;/div&gt;</p> <p>&lt;/div&gt;</p> </div> <p>Produces:</p> <div style="border: 5px solid #000; height: 100px;"> <div> <div style="background-color: #F00; height: 50%;"></div> </div> </div> </td> <td style="width: 50%; padding-left: 1.5em;"> <div style="font-family: 'Andale Mono', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: 12px; border:2px dotted darkgrey; background-color:#FCFFDF; margin: .5em; margin-bottom: 2em; padding: 0 1em;"> <p>&lt;div style="border: 5px solid BLACK; height: 100px;"&gt;</p> <p>&lt;div style="<strong>height: 100%;</strong>"&gt;</p> <p>&lt;div style="background-color: RED; height: 50%;"&gt;<br /> &lt;/div&gt;</p> <p>&lt;/div&gt;</p> <p>&lt;/div&gt;</p> </div> <p>Produces:</p> <div style="border: 5px solid #000; height: 100px;"> <div style="height: 100%"> <div style="background-color: #F00; height: 50%;"></div> </div> </div> </td> </tr> </table> <p>In the second example, <tt>height: 100%;</tt> is actually 100% of 100 pixels — which, of course, is 100 pixels. Therefore, the inner div has a height of 50% of 100 pixels, and therefore becomes 50 pixels in height.</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200354/iframe-height">iframe height</a>

I'm not one to cry for help when only marginally challenged, but I think the "create a fully functional blog" instructions are tripping me up. <p>There is currently no mechanism built into Wikidot to automatically determine who is online or not.</p> <p>One method you could use, but would require some work from your members is to set something up like we are working on over on the <a href="http://livesupport.wikidot.com">Live Support site</a>.</p> <p>Each support mentor has their own "member" page. When we are are online, we edit the tags on our page and add the "<strong>_online</strong>" tag to indicate we are online. When we go offline, we simply edit tags again and delete the tag.</p> <p>We use the ListPages module on the home page to show who is currently online (by examining the tags on the mentor member pages). You can examine the page source on that site to see how it was done.</p> <p>You will probably want to create a member <em>_template</em> page so your members can fill out a structured layout that will make it easy to display specific bits of member info, including images. Take a look at the <em>mentor:_template</em> page to see a good example.</p> <p>You may or may not have more questions after digesting all of this. Let us know if you need more help.</p> <p>BTW, there's no need to post the same question in multiple threads. It's unlikely your questions will be missed by the eagle-eyed community!</p> <p>-Ed</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-10">The Community / How may we help you?</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200508/online-members">Online members</a>

						 <p>I made some progress last night. I found that iframe elements don't seem to work with height in percentages unless <em>all of the elements it's contained in have their height set in percentages</em>. I added this to my CSS and iframes started to work with a percent height setting.</p> <div class="code"> <div class="hl-main"> <pre> <span class="hl-identifier">html</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#html-body</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#container-wrap-wrap</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#container-wrap</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#container</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#content-wrap</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#main-content</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-identifier">#page-content</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-brackets">{</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-reserved">height:</span><span class="hl-code"> </span><span class="hl-number">100</span><span class="hl-string">%</span><span class="hl-code">; </span><span class="hl-brackets">}</span> </pre></div> </div> <br /> Removing any one of those items breaks the height if the iframe if it's set in percent and it reverts back to the default height of around 200px or so. Here's my test page if you want to look: <a href="http://my-wd-local.wikidot.com/sandbox:iframe">http://my-wd-local.wikidot.com/sandbox:iframe</a> <p>This change tends to mess up the page footer and page-options area, so I still have some work to do to get it all figured out, but this is progress (I think!)</p> <p>-Ed</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200354/iframe-height">iframe height</a>

<p>Not exactly like that…</p> <p><strong>Passing arguments via URL</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>ListPages lets you create variations of a single list using specially constructed links, consisting of the page URL (link) followed by arguments and values. These are mainly useful to invoke new selectors, and change the ordering or display.</p> <p>You can pass any arguments in the URL by specifying argument="@URL|default-value" as the argument value and then appending "/name/value" to the URL used to invoke the page. If the URL does not contain a value for the argument, the default is used. Arguments that do not have @URL in their value cannot be set via the URL. The default value is optional: if you use only argument="@URL" and do not provide a value on the URL, then the argument behaves as if it was not set.</p> <p>The two main ways of using arguments-by-URL are (a) to create links to a page explicitly, on another page and (b) to generate links within the ListPages itself, so it will reshow itself with different configurations.</p> </blockquote> <p>I just can't figure out how to allow the player to select different "links" to apply to the @URL argument.</p> <p><strong>Edit</strong>: <a href="http://www.wikidot.com/doc:mailform-module">http://www.wikidot.com/doc:mailform-module</a></p> <p>This has the form stuff I want! Drop down menus and everything… but I don't have a way to get the send button to "send" the user to a page with a specific URL instead of emailing it.</p> <p><a href="http://rpg-bestiary.wikidot.com/listpagestesting">http://rpg-bestiary.wikidot.com/listpagestesting</a></p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-199847/create-an-url-for-listpages">Create an @URL for ListPages</a>

<p>Yes, you're right. I was writing a post, then logged out to check something in another window of Wikidot, and then tried to save the post. Logically, in the same browser, if you have the same site open in various windows, when you log out from one, you log out from all of them. Therefore I got this message. But anyway, I still think that the message is confusing, and it should warn that you should log in, not to give a name.</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-12">Wikidot features and bugs / Bugs and problems</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200278/provide-your-name">Provide your name???</a>

<p>Inspired by <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200289/set-height-of-side-bar">this thread</a> and Rob's brilliance, I have been trying to solve one of my main annoyances with iframes… the fact that setting the height to a percentage simply does not work.</p> <p>I've been examining the source and I see no reason it shouldn't work. I was using <a href="http://www.w3schools.com/TAGS/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_iframe_height">w3schools tryit editor</a> and setting a height in percentages works there. I haven't been able to figure out what the difference is yet. Maybe it has something to to with the positioning as it did with the side bar position discussed in the aforementioned thread.</p> <p>I found several javascript solutions that dynamically calculate the necessary height, but since we have to iframe our javascript, it's a bit of a catch-22.</p> <p>If the devs were to tweak the [[iframe]] syntax to support all of the attributes that can be assigned to an iframe, there might be a better chance to use a javascript solution. I need to do some more testing away from Wikidot to see if it might work.</p> <p>The missing attributes that might be useful are <em>id</em>, <em>name</em>, <em>marginheight</em> and <em>marginwidth</em>.</p> <p>Does anyone have any tricks up their sleeves other than to play around with specific pixel height settings to adjust an iframe's height? A project I'm working on would benefit from a dynamic iframe height.</p> <p>-Ed</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200354/iframe-height">iframe height</a>

						 <p>Hmm…. perhaps you could do that. It would be a very long work-around though.</p> <p>You mean something like this?</p> <div class="code"> <pre> <code>[[module ListPages category="%%field{category}%%" tags="%%field{tags}%%" order="%%field{order}%%"]] * %%title_linked%% (%%tags%% %%_tags%%) [[/module]]</code> </pre></div> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-13">Help / Editing pages</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-199847/create-an-url-for-listpages">Create an @URL for ListPages</a>

<blockquote> <p><strong>RobElliott wrote:</strong> When someone tries to join your site it will send an email to you to accept or decline them as a member.</p> </blockquote> <p>Incorrect. You do not receive an email for this… it only appears in the admin RSS feed, which is accessed from the 'Notifications' section in the Site manager. Open that tab and scroll to the bottom to see a RSS feed link and a password.</p> <p>To be emailed about new members joining your site, you need to manually set up an external tool to mail you when the RSS feed changes. Feedburner might be able to do this.</p> <hr /> <p>Edit: Actually, this does not seem to work 100% with the Join module! If you have people enter a password or apply, it should work, but with an open policy this feed is not updated when someone joins your site!</p> <br/>Forum category: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/c-14">Help / Managing the site</a><br/>Forum thread: <a href="http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-200236/membership-issue">Membership Issue</a>
