Hi,

I created this post to inquire about the status of efforts to create a mechanism for automatically importing and restoring from a saved backup. All existing threads on this topic seem to have died a year or more ago.

Will this ever happen? Is anyone working on it? I am a researcher and I have created an "internal" wikidot site for my lab that could be used for everything to recording protocols, planning and reporting experiments, collaborating, posting lab news, etc. I've been taking a pilot run on this site for a few months and have, by myself, generated hundreds of pages with linked files and data. Presently, my backup is to print a hardcopy of all experimental data to keep in a more traditional lab notebook, but I am hesitant to set my entire lab loose on this site before I am confident that it is secure (i.e., that it won't go away one day).

Thoughts?

Thanks for your input….

Everything was carefully hand crafted pixel by pixel, it is also entirely vector, so if you edit the PSD in .Zip file attatched you can scale these buttons to any size if needed. I included a CSS stylesheet for the coding of the "sprite" images, all you need to do is just upload the sprite images to your site and place the CSS at the bottom of your Stylesheet. I also included a fully layered well organized PSD file for everyone so you can customize these buttons how ever you'd like.

I will also be using these buttons in the new Wikidot CSS theme I am creating. Please refer to the Wikidot Community for more detailed info about this new theme and the release date.
Hi,

I'd like my site to show a different site title (in the browser bar and in each page's header) in a particular category.

Apparently the display of the site title can be adjusted conditional on some criteria, because different pages on community.wikidot.com display different things where the site title belongs (e.g., "Wikidot Community" for the front page and "Wikidot Community New features and ideas" for the current page.

This was requested by jjs before (http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-222152/category-dependent-site-title-and-tagline ) and a user named tukez too (http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-119936/title-addition-modification-by-category ), though their requests were misunderstood (either that, or I misunderstood them).

Thanks,

Frank

Mobile Friendly Browser Support

There have been a few discussions off and on about the desire to make our sites more "mobile friendly". I'm working on a new project that could benefit from better mobile support. I have some ideas on on what I'd like to see, but I'm quickly getting lost in the options surrounding this topic, so I thought I'd throw a few things out here before making any formal wishes on the feedback site.

There is what appears to be a pretty good open source script that could be useful at Detect Mobile Browser that might be good for Wikidot to add to their arsenal. I think having a new module that did something like this could be a relatively simple first step (making use of the above script):

[[module ifMobile redirect="false"]] ... display content [[/module]]

or

[[module ifMobile redirect="true" goTo="http://this-mobile-site.wikidot.com"]]

If something like this is implemented, it would be a nice way show content to only mobile users or to automatically redirect them to a different site.

It's not that hard to strip down a Wikidot site by hiding elements that we don't necessarily want or need on a mobile version of our sites via CSS, but that doesn't help keep the "bloat" to a minimum as recommended by the dotMobi spec. What do you think about having a Site Manager option where we could explicitly define a site as one intended for mobile browsers that has a simpler template, minimal CSS, javascript, etc? That way we would be better able to control the amount of data that loads for each page.

My use case for exploring these options is for a golf course I'm helping out. They'd like to have a mobile friendly, stripped down version of their site that basically gives their customers access to things they would likely use on their phone, like booking a tee time, checking out their rates and maybe looking at the menu for the bar and grille as they approach the end of their round. I started a very basic site to do that (see Eagle Trace Golf - mobile), but it still fails miserably on the mobiReady test I ran on it. There is still some work I need to do to minimize my CSS, but I'm sure it still won't be enough. One issue I found for older phones is that their browsers are very basic and they don't even handle {display: none;} in the CSS, so elements that I try to hide are still loaded and displayed.

Is this something you think is worth pursuing via formal wishes? If so, can you help me sort out the best way to phrase them?

Thanks,
Ed

I'm toying with the idea of providing a crowd-sourced list of restaurants in our neighborhood — for smart-phones. The list would contain names, phone numbers, addresses, links to reviews and to their online takeout menus.

I know it's possible to import CSV tables to phones. I know how to create CSV tables from spreadsheets. And I can imagine attaching a CSV table as a file to a page. But updates to such a table would involve downloading, editing, and uploading again.

Do we have a way to keep the data on a wiki page (suitably formatted for web-viewing), allowing for easy editing, with a button that would export the table contents to CSV?

I find it useful to have the feature to fix links to a page that gets renamed. It would be awesome if the new name would be something else than the Wikidot representation.

Example: some-page -> category1:Some page renamed Here I also change the category and would wish for links like this: [[[some-page]]] to be renamed into [[[category1:Some page renamed]]] instead of [[[category1:some-page-renamed]]].

This would make my life so much easier.
So far i am loving wikidot for what it offers. It is getting better day by day, i hope it just continues this way.

My idea
Why is Javascrpt blocked on Wikidot sites? Is there any particular reason? I wanted to create a pop up window to greet the site visitors with important message but was not able to.

I was trying to do something like this> Charaka Samhita

But it does not work in Wikidot
I compare wikidot with blogger.com, If i have to build a blog i go to blogger because it offers much flexibility. I come to wikidot for creating informational Wiki based sites.

But it really is a big problem for me that a lil javascript is not allowed in here… I would like to ask if there are any plans to make it available? If not then are there any specific reason for this?

PS:
I am not advocating for annoying pop overs and unders windows. Pop up windows that runs through CSS Div tag is least obstructive and A POP UP WINDOW does not take real estate on the site.

It can help
- in communicating with visitors of the site.
- putting notifications and important urgent announcements
- inviting users to join the site

and many other benefits. Only if this pop up window is allowed..

This idea would interest more those who has their wikis in some non-English language, but I think it is a good idea to be able to change ANY text that appears in a Wikidot site. We have already asked (and Wikidot fulfilled it), customible TOC title, and now I suggest another one: The text in a tag cloud.

It is very ugly to have a site in one language and some sentences in English. It looks very unproffesional, and it makes the visitors to lose the confidence in a seriousness of the site.

Therefore, I made a wish for this, please, vote.

http://feedback.wikidot.com/wish:426

(putting post in more appropriate place)

I'd like the wikidot image tag to automatically generate "width=" and "height=" HTML code, so that images get appropriately sized placeholders. This would be particularly useful for resized images (e.g. size="medium").

At present, without manually adding these tags, when an image finally renders it upsets the pagination (things move around). It's more obvious when you use wikidot anchors that point to a page location that occurs after an image. The more images that precede the anchor, the worse the problem gets. In these situations it makes the anchor feature far less useful.

At present, I work around the problem by manually adding "width=" and "height=" code to all wikidot "image" tags, including resized images. It's a bit labour-intensive, particularly with resized images, as I have to preview the page and inspect the resized image to determine the image dimensions.

For example, on this page, I use the following code to generate an image placeholder:

[[f>image groll_house_upstairs.jpg size="medium" width="338px" height="500px"]]

Without the manual tags:

[[f>image groll_house_upstairs.jpg size="medium"]]

…the text moves as the image is rendered.

Anchors are great for letting users jump up/down a page, without scrolling or reloading the page.

It would be nice to have an anchor added to the header, so that users can jump up to the very top of the page, so that the header appears at the top of the page. Not just to the top of the main-content section. I believe this needs to be added by the server that generates the html code.

Just to be clear, I know how to add anchors to the main-content section of my web page.

Today I want to inform you about an experience I made. In the past, I often realized that my main wikidot site (http://webkompetenz.wikidot.com/) was not loading really fast. I explained that to myself with reasons like the "very big wikifarm database" on wikidot.com. But now I discovered that the database is not the problem. I found out that files of the local--files directory were loading rather slowly. So I decided to put them on another web space, and — WOW — my wikidot site is loading in half of the time now.
I suppose the reason has something to do with the HTTP headers, by which files of the local--files directory are sent. I'm under the impression that all files are taken from server with every new page (no caching). That's VERY bad for files like image files which are used in the stylesheet for page layout.

Performance matters! So please exclude resource files in "local--files" from "nocache"!

with best regards
Stefan Münz
