Oh don't single out the embed category. The wishlist and bugs categories share the same terrible fate.
What we can do is either reverse the whole process, or manually change the links in forum posts when we come across them. If only we could search the source-code of a wiki! Then we could search [http://community.wikidot.com/embed: and yield all dead links. Please rate this wish up!
Instead of searching the syntax, I would say you just need API! Then write a damn-simple program in any language you know (XML-RPC is widely supported) to browse through all pages/comments sources and print links (if you're scarred about fixing it by the script itself).

We can test and try it - create all old pages in the embed: ( or other ) categropy and redirect them on the correct new number ?
Why not?
It was gerdami with his "massive redirect try" who had this idea… i forgot where this was…

We should not"rename" the old xyz: category pages to numbers, but let the old pages exist and CREATE NEW Copies with numbers from them.
We have than both .. I have learned that old textual names do not disturb the autonumber feature.
And we can redirect the old pages in a simple manner.

There is a problem with that method: the forum posts. If we create copies of the pages and store them as number in a category, then the copies (which we'd encourage people to view) would not display the forum posts of the original.
I would prefer to create the old pages and redirect them to the new ones (to avoid people posting on the forum thread of both pages).
But this has a problem in itself. The "fixed" bugs/wishes/embeds were placed in some variation of a "fixed" category. Creating these redirects in the fixed category would effectively create clutter, which is what we're trying to avoid in the first place. I would say create redirects only for pages within the bugs/wishlist/embed categories (i.e. not the "fixed" or "wround" categories).
Putting all that aside, wouldn't we prefer the community to be as uncluttered as possible? Thus we should do the hard-work by editing links in forum posts as we come across them rather than create redirect pages. Just an opinion.
Wanted to add a "wishlist:system variables" with a redirect to whislist:14.
The system created a "wishlist:56" and prevented me to rename it to "wishlist:system variables" with the following message: "autonumbered pages cannot be renamed !".

I tried it wioth the embed:4 missing old page. I created the old again and inserted a redirect to the new on.
bad experience - you are not allowed to create a"textual" page name - the new pages ia utonumbered.
Rename the new ( it was embed:30) page to the old one is not possible in a category with autnumber…
I think - the old pages have to "overlive" and the new numbered pages COPIED from the old pages.
Than you can insert the redirect in the old ones and a notice of the redirect in the new ones..

To get around that, go to the site manager, remove autonumbering, create the necessary pages and then re-enable autonumbering.
I just realised something of importance.
This can happen in reverse too:
In each case, there is ONE link to ONE wish/bug/embed. It is unlikely that we'll find more than one link to the same page… anywhere! Actually, wishes are exempt to this, because we want wishes to be rated up and often. But for bugs and embed requests, it is unlikely to find a second link to the same page.
If we go through the whole "redirect" process, is it all in vain? Is it all to satisfy a SINGLE link in a SINGLE forum post? Wouldn't it be much easier to edit that ONE LINK rather than create a redirect page for it?
Clear answer - yes…. if we find the post…now we are back on the wishlist:50 .
